KUCHING: The Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS) will be operational from January, next year.

Its Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg reiterated that Sarawak needed to have its own bank in order to accelerate the state's economic development in the urban and rural areas.

"The bank's board of governors has been formed," he said when officiating at the state-level Gawai Dayak dinner at a hotel, here, last night.

The chief minister also announced that the state government had allocated two pieces of land in Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, here, for the Dayak Cultural Foundation (SCF) and Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) to build their respective centres.

With these centres, he said, he was confident that the Dayak community would prepare themselves to participate in the development planned for the state.

"I am sure the Dayak Cultural Foundation and Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be able to play their part in the expansion of our economic cake in the state," said Abang Johari.

Meanwhile, the dinner function organising chairman, Datuk Gerawat Jala stressed that the young and current generation of Dayaks must acquire the necessary education and professional training to prepare themselves for the digital economy.

"Maintaining our core values of integrity and hard work for success and the willingness to accept changes are fundamental to our future success," he said.

"The majority of the Dayak population who live in the rural areas can meaningfully participate in the digital economy if the government can provide the necessary infrastructure such as road and telecommunication facilities to ensure Internet connectivity and access for these rural communities.

"We trust that the government will put in place these infrastructure in a timely manner," said Gerawat.

Also present at the function were Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, and other state and federal cabinet ministers. -- BERNAMA
