skyz i was here hoping to read about discussion and opinions towards QL venturing into convenience store business. i was surprised that the last comment was 1 week ago. so dead meh this counter? lol
12/04/2016 10:52
Noob123 I am also here to find out the market sentiment on QL. Skyz, how do you think?

skyz personally I dun think convenience store business has demand in malaysia. for myself, I couldn't recall when I stepped into 7-11. maybe just to get a can of coke or ice cream only in this hot weather. hehe... furthermore, malaysian culture is not like so rushing and hectic like those in HK and Japan whereby they really have no time to eat, and will grab anything on the go.
12/04/2016 15:03
skyz and I feel you need quite a lot of capital to stock up in goods to operate convenience store. and from their vast location across the nation, logistics and distribution will eat up the margin. and some items might be slow moving. and at the moment, they can get a bargain price for the supplies as opposed to hypermarkets whereby they get in bulk. i dun think this diversification will bring positive momentum to the group earnings. IMHO
12/04/2016 15:06
omnigunk I took a risk and bought in. This is for long term.
13/04/2016 09:57
michaelwong Time to enter .

Forwardmind Confidence with management decision, their existing own products( fresh eggs, fish, chicken ) will be sold in Family mart too.
13/04/2016 17:15
Aero1 Investors seem to dislike recent corporate move. QL still rich in its valuation.
14/04/2016 09:06
Forwardmind Maybe investors still think too early to invest in. For long term, it is worth to invest...
14/04/2016 09:38
teoct From a business point of view, the FamilyMart should be complementary to current business. That is, it is additional outlets for QL's products. Secondly on logistic, QL already is a master as they are distributing their product to the many supermarkets, etc around the country. So maybe with the convenience store, the current distributing fleet maybe better utilize, thus lowering overall operating cost.

With adoption of IT (which I am sure they will, especially FamilyMart system), the inventory holding cost should be low and there should be minimal dead products.

Management of pilferage and cash flow should be the key focus and this could easily add to the overall margin.

Yes, return for this investment will only become visible in 5 to 10 years. Some figures:
Propose 300 stores in 5 years, each cost 250k, investment of 75 million.
Each store expected to have revenue of 800k, i.e. overall revenue of 240 million.
Say, margin of 5% only, give profit of 12 million, that is 16% return on investment, not bad.

Yes, this is a simple back of the envelop calculation, but think, out of the 240 million revenue, maybe about 40% (i.e. 96 million) of this goes directly back to QL for eggs, fish products, etc. This is about 3% of overall QL revenue. Now, when they hit 1000 stores, that would contribute about 320 million, no small change this.

Of course, one could argue that this may cannibalize it's traditional market, a bit yes. The targeted market is different from traditional supermarkets. Execution risk is there.

My family hold QL shares and will continue to hold.

sbsoo111 Family mart is world second largest convenience store, from what is see, QL is not hunting for local market, but Global. imagine all 17k worldwide store is displaying QL product, that should nice right?

Secondly, it could be an entry ticket to join the global branding.
14/04/2016 12:30
teoct sbsoo111, indeed this is a possibility, especially where both QL and FamilyMart is present.
14/04/2016 13:11
Leong Tan all the news was show timing to enter. but is it over value price now?
14/04/2016 16:10
sbsoo111 since day one QL is over value, no one will look at it's PE
14/04/2016 16:18
Leong Tan the buy price should be 3.5 to 4.0
14/04/2016 19:00
Aero1 I love QL. It is another Nestle in the making. Barrier to competitors are high. Solid business model and inelastic to up and down in economy. But will only consider when the price is below RM4 which will then make the yield more attractive. Don't think the price will move a lot as it is already very rich in valuation.
15/04/2016 08:55
teoct Today Stars reported that KWAP bought into F&N Nutrition S/B at PE of 22. So QL PE for FY 2017 is estimated to be 24 and FY 2018 to be 22.
18/04/2016 17:07
Aero1 Simply the yield does not justify. Their businesses are capital extensive which drains its cash flow. Very positive if one is prepared to hold for long term 3 to 5 years. Can consider for your kids' investment. Malaysian's version of Nestle in the making.
19/04/2016 11:42
kiasuinvestor convenience store is not suitable for malaysia. if malaysian want to buy thing they will drive to hypemarket to buy much more convenience. i go to the nearest 7-11 is about 5min drive i go to aeon also about 5min, why i go 7-11 to spend more?? malaysia convenience store isnt convenience at all. hypemarket is more convenience than convenience store.
06/05/2016 22:47
Aero1 Positive about this venture with Family Mart. But still too rich a valuation. Waiting for right time!
12/05/2016 21:16
Aero1 Malaysian age profile is average 27. Spending with convenient and style is the way forward.
12/05/2016 21:19
skyz I am a few years above the so called average age profile. I forgot when was the last time I stop by a convenience shop to buy something. Probably end of last year, that was because it was middle of the nite (all shopping complex closed) and I wanted some extra few cans of beer. Else, I wouldn't pay 20% extra for the same item I can get elsewhere
31/05/2016 09:48
Yolo it depends, for me to wait for the long queue in hypermarket, i rather go convenience store. Like 99 speedmart, good price and fast.
31/05/2016 11:05
iloveshare128 yes, Family Mart is coming to town... i hate 7-11 so much due to their expensive pricing and based on my experience travelling in Thailand (a lot of Family Mart convenience stores there), Family Mart is way cheaper than 7-11... Vincent Tan, I hope your 7-11 will go bankrupt on day... haha...
04/07/2016 09:37
iloveshare128 Melvin has got a point there... 00 speedmart is cheap and a lot of time even cheaper than Giant, Tesco, etc...
04/07/2016 09:38
iloveshare128 typo.. should be 99 Speedmart
04/07/2016 09:38
iloveshare128 nice analysis... yeah, i agree that family mart will not contribute significantly to QL in near term, due to the gestation period for the first few years... but in long run, it can bring positive impact to the group... i am still holding the shares tight and won't be selling any as I foresee that the growth is steady and promising....
17/08/2016 13:15
yzzl91 first Family Mart opened in KL, concept seems good!
11/11/2016 14:45
federerphong ya , i still hold the share
12/11/2016 09:50
Dolly_Chai family mart will be the 3rd turbo engine for QL after its marine product and integrated livestock products... but in short term (gestation period), earning may not be too much. for mid to long term, it will definitely boost the revenue and profit... so i decided to still keep my QL shares...
07/12/2016 14:09
Dolly_Chai QL is an eagerly expanding company with growing top and bottom lines for more than 10 years...

recently the expanded more in Indonesia for their breeding farming business:

GoodCompanies I decided to sell all of my shares. I think moving forward, QL margin will be squeezed. Competition is very heavy and they are attempting to move further downstream, which is even more congested.
