KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 18): As uncertainties loom on the extension of its public contract to handle renewable of foreign worker permits at home, MyEG Services Bhd is looking harder for opportunities abroad.

The company announced it has partnered with Chinese state-owned Guangxi Beitou IT Innovation Technology Investment Group Co Ltd to offer an international digital identity credential service on the Zetrix blockchain.

This will pave the way for the digitisation of important documents, including government-issued identity credentials, said MyEG in a statement.

The initiative begins with the digitisation of Chinese nationals’ driver's licences on the blockchain, as they can apply online for a digitised version of their documents in the form of a verified credential stored on the Zetrix blockchain wallet.

By leveraging the functions of the Zetrix blockchain developed by MyEG, the platform is able to facilitate cross-border communication between China and Asean countries under the premise of legal compliance, said Beitou IT Innovation chairman Shuiping Lai.

Meanwhile, founder and group managing director of MyEG Wong Thean Soon commented the company will continue to build real-world Web3 applications leveraging on its unique functionality of ensuring the authenticity of digitised documents, including identity credentials and trade documents.

MyEG was in the spotlight last week after Kota Melaka Member of Parliament Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-DAP) alleged that the company has continued to take payments for its permit renewal service from employers. This was despite its services having been suspended by the government since as early as February, Khoo alleged.

The company, meanwhile, clarified its concession providing foreign worker permit renewal services “had not been suspended since February of this year”, as it continued to face calls to reimburse employers that had paid upfront for its services.

Shares of MyEG gained three sen at 81 sen on Monday, translating into a market capitalisation of RM6.06 billion.
