KUALA LUMPUR: The rising cost of living and dangerous road intersections are the primary 4concerns among Kuala Kubu Baharu constituents.

They have been voicing their frustrations over the persistently high living expenses, despite their repeated calls for the authorities to address the issue.

Some residents said the prices of goods and services in the area were often doubled compared with other places.

This disparity in prices may be attributed to the area's popularity as an ecotourism destination.

Speaking to the "New Straits Times", a retired government servant who wishes to be known only as Haji Zulkifli expressed his dismay over the significant amount of money required to buy groceries in the area.

He said that despite inspections carried out by enforcement officers, the prices of goods remained unchanged.

"One of our major concerns revolves around the availability and affordability of basic goods.

"The prices of fish here are disproportionately high, considering that these can be bought at a lower rate in wholesale markets.

He said fish that were priced between RM7 and RM9 elsewhere were being sold for up to RM13 in Kuala Kubu Baharu.

"Another issue is the difficulty in obtaining local rice. We're compelled to buy whatever rice is available, often priced around RM40 per bag, not to mention the steep prices of onions," he said.

The 55-year-old said most locals were government servants, with others being self-employed.

He said another concern among constituents was the condition of the roads and the dangerous intersections in certain areas, which have resulted in fatalities.

One particularly hazardous intersection is the one near Masjid Jamek Al Rahimah, which can cause confusion among road users unfamiliar with the area.

"This three-way intersection is bewildering to outsiders. Why wasn't it constructed like other intersections. Accidents have occurred due to drivers making incorrect turns.

Meanwhile, a 52-year-old constituent who wanted to be known only as Sandeirajan, said Kuala Kubu Baharu was a peaceful place that had only a few issues.

The retired army officer, who last served at Erskine Camp, said choosing Kuala Kubu Baharu as the place to spend his golden years was the best decision, especially as the town is developing, with several well-known businesses opening their doors.

"I chose to settle in Kuala Kubu Baharu after retiring from the military because of its peaceful environment.

"This is my third year of retirement, and I took the opportunity to start a business in Pekan Kuala Kubu Baharu to fill my time.

"There are only very few problems here. Running a business in this town is hassle-free. I feel comfortable here. Most businesses here are run by long-time residents."

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election in is set for May 11.

This constituency boasts a diverse demographic, with Malays constituting 50 per cent of the electorate, followed by Chinese (30 per cent) and Indians (18 per cent).

The by-election is being held following the death of its three-term assemblyman, Lee Kee Hiong, from the DAP.
