KUCHING: Sarawak will go door-to-door to vaccinate dogs against rabies, particularly in areas where many cases involving humans have been recorded.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee said the exercise will begin in several areas in Kuching, between April 29 to May 3.

These areas include Tabuan Jaya, Taman Landeh, Desa Wira, and Sungai Maong Tengah.

The vaccination exercise will involve various agencies, government departments and local councils, as part of Sarawak's aim to ensure zero-rabies by 2030.

Since 2017, Sarawak has seen an outbreak of rabies, with 78 cases involving humans recorded, resulting in 71 deaths.

In that time, some 213,190 dogs out of the estimated 300,000 dogs in the state have been vaccinated.

As of April 19 this year, the Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Bintulu and Sri Aman divisions have been declared as rabies-infected areas.

The committee said that aside from vaccinating pets, the authorities will also raise public awareness about rabies and the importance of licensing for pets.
