KOTA BARU: The Malaysia Checkpoints and Border Agency (MCBA), which started its operation early this month, will help reduce smuggling activities of controlled items along the border.

Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Fuziah Salleh, however, admitted that MCBA will likely face huge challenges similar to the previous enforcement agencies tasked at manning the border.

"It is not easy to put a stop to this menace, which has been a challenge for border agencies for a long time.

"I believe MCBA can help strengthen cooperation between agencies in implementing Ops Bersepadu." she told this to reporters after attending the Hari Raya open house organised by Kelantan banch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry here today.

Fuziah said the decreasing water level of the Golok River, caused by the hot weather, has also led to an increase in smuggling activities.

"I observed that smuggling activities were still occurring despite the efforts of enforcement agencies on patrol. This highlights the challenges they face in border control," she said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently said management and control of the nation's borders are now under the authority of the MCBA

"The MCBA's source of authority comes with the existing agencies under it, such as the police, Customs Department and the Immigration Department.

"Therefore, all departments without exception must accept this instruction seriously and act now," Anwar said.
