HULU SELANGOR: Free funeral transport services and a one-stop centre to manage utility bill payments are among the initiatives that Independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin will provide to residents if she wins the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

The by-election’s youngest candidate has also pledged to set up a specialised transport service for seniors who need to visit health care facilities, according to her 20-point manifesto that was launched yesterday.

The manifesto, which also focuses on tackling rising living costs and improving roads and public lighting, includes a plan for a monitoring system to regulate the prices of essential goods.

“I hope to use this platform to reflect the people’s dissatisfaction with the pressure of living costs,” said Nyau, on why she decided to participate in the by-election despite knowing the steep odds against winning.

The 27-year-old logistics company manager said that her decision to run for election has been a “personal initiative”.

“I don’t have any political party background; my candidacy is based on personal initiative, with the support and help of friends.

“So far, we have visited more than 20% of the constituency, and next week we will continue to visit more areas,” she said yesterday.

Nyau is running against Pakatan Harapan’s Pang Sock Tao, Perikatan Nasional’s Khairul Azhari Saut, and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hafizah Zainuddin, in the May 11 polls.

In her manifesto, Nyau also promised to form a committee to eradicate hardcore poverty within the B40 income group and to set up a rapid action unit to tackle crime and drug abuse.

Education programmes also featured prominently in the manifesto with a proposal for specialised scholarships for high-performing students and financial aid for university registration fees.

Nyau also promised to invest more in sports and adventure activities as part of her plan to turn the Kuala Kubu Baru hill town into a popular destination for outdoor pursuits, food and crafts.

To do this, Nyau said she will boost local entrepreneurship by easing the application process for food stall licences and expedite approvals for state government grants.

If she wins, Nyau also promised that her service centre will operate throughout the week.
