KUCHING: Sarawak is set to become a significant exporter of hydrogen, with plans to ship 240,000 tonnes to Japan and Korea by 2028, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

This was announced by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg during his address at the Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak (DUBS) Aidilfitri gathering.

He said this move would position Sarawak as a frontrunner in the renewable energy sector and enhance its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through the imposition of sales tax on these exports.

"We will retain 7,000 tonnes for domestic use, while the rest will be exported, enabling us to apply a sales tax that will boost our state revenue significantly," he said.

He said the importance of embracing technology, especially for local entrepreneurs to leverage the extensive infrastructure developments aimed at supporting the digital economy and large-scale projects within the state.

"To aid in mastering this technology, I have allocated RM6.5 million to DUBS for machinery training, enabling members to undertake projects that involve modern construction methods and other technological applications effectively," he added.
