KUALA LUMPUR: Good governance is the bedrock of lasting partnerships within the defence sector, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

In his opening speech at the “Enhancing National Security through Good Governance and Credible Partnerships: Opportunities & Challenges” seminar, the Defence Minister said that good governance was imperative for such partnerships to flourish as it brings confidence and trust.

“Transparency, accountability and the rule of law are the cornerstones of thriving good governance. Having the principles will allow us to enchanted our global reputation.

“This will position Malaysia as a reliable and credible partner at the international fora.

"In return a variety of robust international partnerships will help extend our reach and capabilities, allowing for shared information, joint exercises and security cooperation to address mutual threats,” he said while speaking at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security (Natsec) Asia 2024 exhibitions here on Tuesday (May 7).

He also said that partnerships would also benefit all, adding that no country was too small to contribute or too big to participate.

On the issue of corruption and a lack of transparency, the minister said that they would undermine stability and trust, leading to the weakening of security frameworks.

“Our nation will be more vulnerable to internal and external threats. Addressing these challenges is imperative; it requires more than just incremental improvements,” he said.

The minister repeated the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's stance that Malaysia will maintain its “neutrality and non-alignment”.

“Whether diplomacy, trade or security, it is the driving force that keeps Malaysia’s unique position as a friendly nation,” he said.
