KUALA LUMPUR: The United States government appreciates Malaysia's stance in condemning terrorist activities and affirms its commitment to combating terrorist financing.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was due to Malaysia's strong legal framework and its inclusive enforcement.

"They appreciate that, in terms of laws, we have solid legislation. It's not just about having the laws in place, but we also enforce them effectively.

"I took this opportunity (of meeting with US Treasury Deparment Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson) to share (with them) about a new five-year strategic plan, recently completed by the Home Ministry to address issues related to extremism and terrorism, is now available," he said.

Saifuddin was speaking to reporters after the closing ceremony of the Defence Services Asia and National Security Asia exhibition.

He said the US government also acknowledges Malaysia's readiness to engage with them openly on the matter.

"They conveyed (during the meeting) what they considered important to them, and we provided our perspective in terms of political commitment, laws, regulations, enforcement, and regional cooperation.

"They took note of all these matters, and they want this engagement process to be not just a one-off event but a continuous process. We are open, not only with our neutral policies, but we will engage with all stakeholders."

Saifuddin added that among the topics discussed was a particular organisation associated with Palestine suspected of money laundering.

"I simply stated the fact that the organisation in question is already under ongoing investigation. We have frozen assets and have filed charges against them in court in accordance with our laws and regulations. So, any actions that violate Malaysian law have already been addressed.

"They respected our stance and recognised that, especially in the context of terrorism and financing terrorism, we have a firm position regarding regional cooperation within Asean."

Earlier, Saifuddin announced that Malaysia reiterated its stance condemning terror activities in affirming its commitment to efforts in fighting terrorist financing.

He said the government acknowledged concerns raised by the US about possible money laundering activities involving groups linked to Malaysia.
