Malaysia's new vehicle sales jump 21pct to 57,991 units in April

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's new vehicle sales edged up 21 per cent to 57,991 units in April 2024 from 47,802 units sold in the same month in 2023, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). 

MAA, however, noted that the total industry volume (TIV) last month was 18 per cent lower than March, which was at 71,052 units, due to the short working month due to Hari Raya festive holidays.

The MAA expects vehicle sales in May to be slightly higher than April 2024.

The TIV for year-to-date April was eight per cent more than the same corresponding period in 2023.

Salee of passenger vehicles saw a 25 per cent increase, with 53,253 units sold compared to 42,587 units sold in the same month last year.

However, sales of commercial vehicles fell 9.0 per cent at 4,738 units compared to 5,215 units sold in April 2023.

MAA reported that year-to-date sales volume till April 2024 reached 260,236 units from the 240,417 units sold during the same period last year.

Production for the passenger vehicles segment increased by 40 per cent last month, with 53,857 units manufactured compared to 38,575 units in the corresponding month last year.

In the commercial vehicles segment, there was an 18 per cent increase to 3,038 units from 2,585 units.

Overall, the production in April 2024 totaled 56,895 units, reflecting a 38 per cent increase from 41,160 units in April 2023.
