Covid-19 patients cured and discharged outnumber new cases [NSTTV]

PUTRAJAYA: For the first time since the middle of last month, the number of daily Covid-19 cases fell below the 100 mark to 85 new cases reported to the Health Ministry today.

The last time the country reported new cases in double-digit was on March 14 when it was reported that 35 people tested positive for the deadly virus on that day.

At the same time, the number of Covid-19 patients cured and discharged from hospitals were double that of new confirmed cases.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said a total of 169 people were given a clean bill of health, bringing the total number of people who have recovered from the infection to 2,647 cases or 52.2 per cent of the cumulative total of 5,072 cases.

“After almost a month following the implementation of the first and second phase of the Movement Control Order (MCO), the trend involving new Covid-19 cases (daily) is slightly under control without a significant increase in the number of people infected by the virus.

“Whereas, the number of Covid-19 patients discharged from the wards daily also continues to increase daily.

“Such development is the encouraging and is due to the implementation of the MCO, which has entered its third phase from April 15 until April 28,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

He was speaking at the daily press conference on the Covid-19 situation in the country here today.

As of press time, Dr Noor Hisham said 56 people are being treated at the intensive care units, of which, 32 require breathing assistance.

The ministry’s National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) reported one Covid-19 fatality involving a 69-year-old man with a history of suffering from diabetes and high-blood pressure.

The death toll from deadly virus the country currently stood at 83 or 1.64 per cent from the total cases.

Malaysia, he said, achieved better outcome in its fight to contain the pandemic as the approach implemented in the country is different compared to the method adopted in some countries such as the United Kingdom (UK) and Italy.

He explained that it was compulsory for people tested positive of Covid-19 to be isolated and admitted into hospitals, which enabled healthcare personnel to treat and monitor closely the patients.

“This is something different from other countries. If you look into UK and Italy, people who tested positive, asymptomatic and mild symptoms are advised to stay at home.

“Here in Malaysia, people who tested positive of Covid-19 will be isolated in the hospital, which enables us to monitor them closely. And due to the close monitoring and treatment given, we see that our outcome is much better,” he said.
