Thailand: Anti-fake news centre detects sharp rise in Covid-19 misinformation; 3 imported cases on Sept 26

BANGKOK, Sept 26 : An alarming rise in fake news during the Covid-19 outbreak has left authorities scrambling to tackle the problem.

The Digital Economy and Society Ministry (DES) says it is now examining 6,411 posts of suspected misinformation, more than half of which are health-related.

Buddhipongse Punnakanta, DES minister, said people could pass on information about news they suspected was fraudulent to the ministry’s anti-fake news centre.

He also asked media to fight the proliferation of fake news by helping spread accurate information to the public, and announced plans to organise a workshop for his staff to combat the problem.

The anti-fake news centre has received more than 17 million (17,255,640) reports of misinformation since its launch on November 1 last year, said DES permanent secretary Ajarin Pattanapanchai.

Of the posts reported, 18,479 were confirmed as fake news.The centre is currently assessing another 6,411 reports - 3,539 related to health, 2,499 to government policy, 125 to disasters and 248 to the economy,

Meanwhile, there were three Covid-19 cases in state quarantine over a 24-hour period, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration said on Saturday (Sept 26).

The new patients had arrived from Luxembourg, Turkey and Albania.

The total number of confirmed cases in Thailand increased to 3,522 (584 in state quarantine), of whom 101 are in hospital and 3,362 have recovered and been discharged, while the death toll is 59.

According to Worldometer, as of 9am on Saturday, the total number of confirmed cases increased to 32.7 million (up by 317,937 over a 24-hour period), 24.17 million have recovered, 63,788 are in severe condition, and 993,413 have died.

Thailand ranks 137th for most cases in the world, while the US has the most number with 7.24 million, followed by India 5.9 million, Brazil 4.69 million, Russia 1.13 million and Colombia 798,317.
