MQ Trader - How to validate buy signals by using MQ Live Backtesting? [ECOWLD]

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Fri, 1 Nov 2019, 4:13 PM

ECOWLD (8206)

Eco World Development Group Bhd is a Malaysian property development company. The company has development projects including new townships, integrated commercial developments, luxury high-rise apartments, and green business parks.

Fundamental Analysis

Figure 1: Annual revenue of ECOWLD

Figure 2: Annual profit of ECOWLD

Figure 3: NAPS of ECOWLD

Figure 4: PE ratio of ECOWLD

The figure above shows that there is a remarkable improvement in ECOWLD’s financial, as ECOWLD has turned loss to profit with tremendous growth since year 2015. Its revenue is also moving in the same direction indicating that ECOWLD can convert sales into profit constantly every year. Besides, the NAPS of ECOWLD is increasing constantly over the years showing that the value of its share is appreciating in the long term. ECOWLD is also currently undervalued, as its PE ratio is 12.13 and it is decreasing over the past few years since year 2014.

Fundamental Rating

Based on MQ Trader’s criteria, stocks with MQ Fundamental Rating more than 2.5/5.0 are considered as stocks with good fundamentals. ECOWLD scores 2.9/5.0 for its fundamental rating, as it passes half of the fundamental tests, so it is classified as fundamentally okay company. It can be put into our watch list for long term investment.

3-years Technical Chart

By comparing the SMA 200 (long term trend) and EMA 50 (mid term trend) with the current trend of the share price, this stock is still undergoing long term downtrend. This is because three of these trends are moving downwards where the current trend is located below EMA 50 and SMA 200.

Technical Analysis

MQ Technical Rating

Figure 5: Technical rating captured on 21 Oct 2019

There is no bullish signal detected on ECOWLD’s technical chart at the moment, as its MQ Technical Rating is lower than 3.0/5.0 which is the benchmark set by MQ Trader to be considered as a bullish stock.

Figure 6: Technical chart captured on 21 Oct 2019

There are only a few MQ Trader trading strategies that capture buy signal recently. One of the examples which is EMA 5 Crossover on daily technical chart is as shown in the figure above.

To confirm the signal quality, MQ Backtesting is used to determine the success rate of the signal.

Based on the MQ Backtesting result, all the latest buy signals released on 17 October 2019 are validated to have poor rating. In short, the probability of sharp increase of share price to happen within 10 trading days is anticipated to be quite low.

To determine whether the share price moves according to our prediction, ECOWLD’s share price is observed on T+10 (1 Nov 2019).

Figure 7: ECOWLD’s daily technical chart captured on 1 Nov 2019

A sell signal appeared on 28 Oct 2019 indicating that there is no sign of rebound signal within these 10 trading days. MQ Backtesting results have verified the strength of buy signal to help traders to distinguish false signals easily.

MQ Trader’s View

Budget 2020 has stirred the property sector with some positive policy updates, allowing the property developer to clear their stock, including ECOWORLD.

1. Lowering the threshold for condominiums and apartments in urban areas from RM1 Million to RM600k by 2020 for foreign ownership.

2. The government will provide a guarantee of up to RM3bil for the RM10bil in financing for first home purchase for up to RM500k through rent-to-own (RTO) scheme.

3. Youth Housing Scheme by Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) will be extended until 31 Dec 2021.

Based on above, Budget 2020 does help property developer to clear their existing inventories, but it does not work as incentive to create strong buy momentum in residential segment.

Conclusion

In our opinion we maintain NEUTRAL on property sector as we do not anticipate earnings surprise in short term. Hence, we will save our capital for better opportunities instead of buying or holding the share that are in sideways movement. At the same time, we will put ECOWLD in the watch list for grabbing the opportunity when there is any news that can impact the share price positively.

MQ Trader - Turtle Strategy Rules

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Mon, 29 Jul 2019, 5:33 PM

Turtle trading is a trend-following strategy used by traders to benefit from the sustained momentum. It tends to look for both upside and downside breakouts which are used as the main concept of turtle trading. To know more about the background of Turtle Trading, please read MQ Trader - Introduction of Turtle Strategy.

The rules of Turtle Strategy

  1. Markets traded: The turtles traded in large, liquid markets where traders can find sufficient trading opportunities.

For instance, the markets that turtles did trade were as follows:

  • 10 & 30 Year U.S. Treasury Bond and 90 Day U.S. Treasury Bills.
  • Index futures such as S&P 500.
  • Commodities like coffee, sugar, cotton, cocoa, heating oil, unleaded gas and crude oil.
  • Precious metals like copper, silver and gold.
  • Currencies like the Swiss Franc, Japanese Yen, British Pound and Canadian dollar.
  1. Position-sizing: Sophisticated position sizing algorithm is practiced by the Turtle Traders who determine the size of their position based on the volatility of the asset. This system can improve the diversification, as the size of every position is similar to each other. The volatility of the market can be measured by using 20-day exponential moving average of the true range.
  2. Entries: 2 simple entry systems are used to enter a position in turtle trading strategy.

System 1: Short-term system based on 20-day breakout.

The first entry triggers when the price breaks out of a 20-day price range if the previous breakout failed. The probability of success for the next breakout is higher if a long or short breakout failed when the price moved back into the range.

System 2: Longer-term system based on 55-day breakout.

The turtles entered (one unit) when the price moved out of a 55-day price range. This breakout method is usually used in case the 20-day breakout was missed.

All the trades are always ended on the breakout before the daily close of the markets.

  1. Exit. In turtle system, traders also use 2 systems to exit a position.

System 1: the exit was a 10 day low for long positions and a 10 day high for short positions.

System 2: the time period was extended to 20days for both long and short positions.

High disciplinary is required in following the rules of entering and exiting a position because the returns of trading can be affected remarkably even one or two winning trades are missed in a year.

Figure 1: Trading signals generated by using Turtle Trading Strategy

Is the Turtle Trading Strategy still relevant today?

The Turtle Trading system was proven to work very well for traders in 80’s. Some of you might be wondering whether this system is still effective in the market today. Unfortunately, it does not entirely fit into today’s market which have been changing drastically from time to time.

However, the basic philosophy has not changed over the years. Some adjustments can be made to make Turtle Trading system for accommodating today’s market movements, as trends still occur where traders can still grab advantage from them. Besides, a system still plays a crucial role in performing successful trading. Without a clearly defined set of parameters for entries, exits, position-sizing and stop losses, a traders is basically using his instinct to make his investment decision. It might eventually lead the trader to overtrade and position-sizing inappropriately.

To ensure that traders make investment decision wisely, quantitative analysis is implemented in MQ Trader stock analysis system to provide traders a set of rule with simple and precise parameters that assist them from stocks picking to risk management. Furthermore, different trading strategies and indicators which are widely used by fund managers, are built into MQ Trader Stock Analysis tool. This is to make sure that traders to confirm a trend is in place based on facts and data instead of emotions and rumors.

MQ Trader - Introduction of Turtle Trading Strategy

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Wed, 24 Jul 2019, 6:19 PM

The unreliability of human can be eliminated by creating and following rules for the process of trading where the rules can only be implemented systematically and effectively by using systems. A successful trader always rely on the use of systems to carry out a trading plan more efficiently. This statement is proven to be true since decades ago when one of the famous systems, namely the turtle trading strategy that was known as a market legend since 1983.

What is Turtle?

Figure 1: Dennis placed an ad in The Wall Street Journal to recruit “turtles”

Turtle is the name given to a group of traders who were selected to participate in an experiment conducted by two famous commodity traders, Richard Dennis and William Eckhardt. In the experiment, 10 out of 1000 applicants were selected to attend training for two weeks in ChiCago and they were then given small accounts to trade with before proving themselves.

Figure 2: Richard Dennis

Figure 3: William Eckhardt

The aim of the study was to identify whether a successful trader is born due to a genetic predisposition or proper training. The outcome of the experiment was used to settle the debate between Dennis and Eckhardt where the former believed that a person could be trained while the latter thought trading ability is a gifted skill.

Eventually, Dennis had demonstrated that traders with little or no trading experiences could turn out to be excellent traders after they were taught with a simple set of rules, as the turtles ended up generating returns of more than 80% compounded rate over the next four years.

Turtle Trading System

The turtle trading system included all the key decisions for a successful trading such as what markets to trade in, how to size positions, when to buy and sell, when to exit a losing position, when to exit a winning position and tactics for buying and selling. The main reason of this setting in turtle trading system is to ensure that novice traders’ own judgement, bias and emotion did not cloud their decision-making in trading. Hence, traders just have to follow the rules strictly to generate profit by using turtle trading system which was known as a profitable mechanical trading system.

Characteristics of Turtle Trading System:

  1. Consistency in executing orders according to the trading signals generated by the breakouts from key moving averages. This is because the entire gains throughout the year could come from one or two crucial trades out of numerous trades in the year.
  2. Placing limit orders over market orders and avoiding using stops are recommended when placing orders. This is because limit orders provided a higher chance for fills and less slippage than market orders.
  3. Relying on prices rather than relying on information from television or newspaper commentators to make trading decisions.
  4. Do not risk more than 2% of your account on a single trade.
  5. Always get comfortable with huge drawdowns if you expect a big return.

In the next article, we will be sharing on the concept of turtle trading system and how we can implement it in the stock market today. To read more, please visit MQ Trader - Turtle Strategy Rules.

MQ Trader - What is Quantitative Analysis?

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 9 Apr 2019, 10:35 AM

What is MQ Trader?

MQ Trader stands for Malaysian Quantitative Trader. Why do we call ourselves “Quantitative”?

Quantitative analysis is a technique that uses mathematical and statistical modeling, measurement and research to identify trading opportunities. It enables investors to examine and analyze past, current and anticipated future events by using a large number of information to study and process each stock. It is generally only available to larger financial institutions and hedge funds.

Every investor has different level of knowledge ranging from beginners to professionals in the stock market. We have seen a lot of traders losing their hard-earned money because they do not have the right tool and mindset to trade and compete with the professional traders and investors. Thus, we want to include our knowledge and expertise in Quantitative Analysis into MQ Trader Stock Analysis Tool, so as to equip all of our group members with proper tool and right mindset in seizing opportunities from the stock market – carving pathway for our MQ group members to a level playing field via MQ Trader Stock Analysis Tool.

Advantages of Quantitative Analysis

  • Increase investment returns

It is able to identify and model the patterns to predict the price movement of a stock, so as to increase the winning chance of our investment. MQ Live Backtesting is one of the strategies that predicts the share price movement by analyzing a number of signals based on past 5 years historical data of a stock.

  • Discipline in investment

Quantitative analysis enables investors to trade based on the facts and data which are consistent and repeatable. It is a systematic methodology that provides result and manage investment risk based on the historical data.

  • Unemotional investing

Quantitative Analysis does not take subjective aspects of a company such as company’s management and prospect into account, as it only analyzes factors that can be quantified. Hence, misinterpretation of information which can lead to emotional biases and eventually cloud the judgement about a company can be avoided.

  • High efficiency

Quantitative analysis is able to run a big number of investments simultaneously while the traditional analyst can only look at a few at a time. Hence, it can locate the inefficiencies before others do.

  • Lower volatility

Multiple trading strategies can be applied in the investment, various risk characteristics of a company can be identified. For instance, one strategy might detect the stock is performing bullish at the moment but another strategy shows the share is still undergoing bearish price movement but potential rebound is identified. This approach can avoid false signals generated by the trading strategies.

Conclusion

Quantitative analysis is useful in providing insight into the valuation or historic performance of a stock. Besides, it also combines different trading strategies into a single portfolio. This makes our investment efficient, as one strategy may look for companies that are currently undervalued whereas another strategy can look for stocks with rising price. Thus, quantitative analysis is used in conjunction with fundamental and technical analysis in MQ Trader system to provide a better investment strategy in both short and long term.

MQ Trader - Should we use margin to buy stocks?

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 26 Mar 2019, 6:08 PM

Margin account allows investors to leverage their position in the investment. Leverage is known to have the ability in trading a large position with only a small fraction of trading capital efficiently. With proper risk management, leverage can juice investors’ purchasing power to boost the return on investment.

There is a number of scenarios which investors can utilize margin to magnify their profit from stock investment:

  1. The share price does not meet expected price within the settlement days of collateral accounts. To know more, please visit MQ Trader – Getting Started with Margin
  2. The returns generated by cash upfront trading account is lower than expectation.
  3. Buying stocks with expected returns/dividend yield which is higher than the interest rate of margin.

Boost Equity Return

Margin can help to multiple the returns from the investment especially when the stock market is experiencing valuation contraction which can contribute to low returns for the stock market in a long term. The returns of margin trading can be even more attractive when the cost of interest is lower than the returns from the investment.

For dividend investors, margin borrowing can be a good idea to magnify the dividend yield. The returns can be significantly higher especially strong fundamental companies with dividend yield higher than the interest rate of the margin account are invested.

We can compare the return generated with and without leverage by using the example below:

Example:

Investor A has only RM 30,000 to invest and he has a portfolio of shares with 8% of returns/dividend annually. The chart below shows how the return vary over 10 years when leverage is used.

Assumption:

  1. The interest rate of margin account is 5%.
  2. The return/dividend remains the same over the years.
  3. Maximum leverage is used (2 x cash).

Based on the chart above, the returns grow in greater extent over the time when leveraged trading account is used. The profit of leveraged trading account over 10 years is RM 1799.11 higher than the non-leveraged trading account’s.

Open Margin Account

With proper risk management techniques, margin can significantly enhance your investment strategy to maximize the profit margin from your investment.

To Begin investing utilizing margin:

  • STEP 1: Make sure you understand the risks and benefits of using margin.
  • STEP 2: Have at least RM 30,000 of assets.
  • STEP 3: Sign up for a margin account
  • STEP 4: Start enjoying the benefits and flexibility offered by a margin account.

MQ Trader - Getting Started with Margin

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Fri, 22 Mar 2019, 10:47 AM

Margin Borrowing

Borrowing on margin involves cash borrowing from a broker to invest in securities which can be used as collaterals. It can potentially provide you with up to 2 times the buying power of a traditional cash upfront account. Investing through margin borrowing can magnify both profit and loss made on investment.

The example below shows how margin borrowing magnifies the profit and loss as compared with a cash upfront account and a collateral account. In this example, only RM 30,000 of equity is used for all the account types.

(i) Stock price drops to RM 2.50 on T+7

Investors with collateral account have to sell the Stock A, as money (RM 30,000) in the trading account is insufficient to pick up the share on T+7. RM 10,000 of loss will be incurred instantly. However, both cash upfront account and margin account allows investors to hold Stock A beyond T+7 until the share price reaches their desired price.

(ii) Stock price rises to RM 3.50 on T+10

Margin account can twice the profit earned by cash upfront account as shown in the figure above. Collateral account experiences the loss instead of grabbing this opportunity, as Stock A has to be sold on T+7 when the share price was RM 2.50.

Cash upfront account VS Collateral account VS Margin account

A cash upfront account enables investors to trade stocks based on the cash that is deposited into the trading account. When buying securities through a cash account, the investor must deposit cash to settle the trade or sell the existing position on the same trading day for the sale proceeds to settle the buy order.  This account is fairly straightforward and suitable for investors who are more conservative.

A collateral account provides investors up to 3 times cash deposited and 2 times shares of trading limit. The length of settlement days for the outstanding shares is typically 3 to 7 days. If investors wish to hold the shares more than the settlement days, more cash has to be deposited into the trading account until the cash in the trading account is enough to pick up the outstanding shares. Interest is charged on the outstanding shares starting from T+4.

On the other hand, a margin account allows investors to borrow cash from a broker to increase their securities buying power by as much as 50%. It also exposes investors to more opportunities like short selling which are not valid to both accounts above. This allows investors to use margin to leverage their position and profit from both bullish and bearish market. A margin account can be very cost effective, as the outstanding purchase is subject to a daily interest rate charged by the broker. No interest will be incurred if no outstanding position is available in the trading account.

MQ Trader – Daily Trading Signals

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 18 Dec 2018, 6:12 PM

Introduction

Most people have a hard time to monitor the stocks closely, as our working hours tend to overlap with trading hours. Opportunities might be missed if we are unable to capture the change in share price instantly. MQ Trader system is a powerful tool which can help us to protect our capital and earn profit from the stock market. What is Daily Trading Signal?

Daily Trading Signal is a screener that filters the stocks with trading signals detected by MQ Trading Strategies such as EMA 5 Crossover, ADX Crossover and etc. The filtered stocks are classified into 2 categories namely “BUY Signals” and “SELL Signals”.

Legends:

Code: Stock Code on Bursa Malaysia

Name: Name of the stock

Signal Time: The time when the buy/sell signal is detected

Duration: Duration of the technical chart (ranging from 5 mins to weekly)

Change: Daily price change

Volume: Trading Volume of the day

Volume MA (60 Days): Volume Moving Average for 60 days. To know more about it, please read MQ Trader – Volume Screener Indicators

There are filters for signal types, duration and volume available to sort out the stocks more specifically:

By using Daily Trading Signal, a list of potential stocks will be obtained systematically within seconds. The buy signal quality can be further confirmed by clicking running MQ Live Backtesting as shown below:

To know more about MQ Live Backtesting, please read MQ Trader – Introduction to Backtesting.

Conclusion

Malaysia market sentiment remains weak at the moment due to various events such as trade tensions between China and US, fluctuation in crude oil price and political issues. However, opportunities always come with risks. Coupling with MQ Live Backtesting, MQ Daily Trading Signal can filter stocks with strong buy signal to increase our winning chance in investment. MQ Trader – How to invest in stocks (Part 2)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Wed, 5 Dec 2018, 5:59 PM

Introduction

Investment seems to be hard for some investors especially beginners that have very little of knowledge on investment. They might have some concerns on being trapped in a downtrending stock due to exposure to fake or bias information, lack of experiences and etc. This article is the continuation of our previous post - MQ Trader - How to invest in stocks (Part 1).

In this blog post, we will be sharing our MQ Trader Investment Methodology which can act as a guideline for investors to start their investment. Instead of giving you the fish, we would like to teach you how to fish.

MQ Trader Investment Methodology

Step 1 - Stock Info

I3investor.com is a leading stock investment portal, dedicated to independent stock traders and investors. It is a good place to search for potential stocks if you have no idea on what to invest. Popular stocks with trending financial information including the Latest Stocks Discussions, Market Blogs, List of the Most Active Stocks, List of Trending Hot Stocks and etc are available on i3investor.com. It can help us to find out stocks which are actively traded on the stock market, as these stocks usually have high liquidity and trading volume that will not be manipulated by investors easily.

Stock Discussion

Apart from stock info, I3investor.com is also a platform where users can discuss and share their ideas about stock market freely with each other. There are several categories of forum such as stock, news & blogs, announcement & events, watchlist, general, personal finance and timeout available on Social Forum.

Portfolio Management System

This system is one of the benefits that MQ Trader team provides MQ Trader group members to keep track of the portfolio of their trading accounts efficiently and systematically. Free synchronization of trade data to advanced Portfolio Management System will be enabled upon request by MQ Trader group members. Thus, there is no need for users to record their transactions manually.

Step 2 - Stock Analysis

After getting the information of stocks, fundamental and technical analysis of the stocks is required to determine the performance of the company as well as trend of the share price respectively. A powerful and comprehensive tool is a must to carry out stock analysis systematically and efficiently. MQ Trader Stock Analysis system is sponsored by MQ Trader to MQ Trader group members in analyzing a stock fundamentally and technically based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), various technical indicators and quantitative data.

To know more about fundamental and technical analysis provided by MQ Trader, please read MQ Trader – Fundamental Analysis [TOPGLOV] and MQ Trader – Technical Analysis [UNISEM].

Figure 1: Fundamental Analysis of PBB

Figure 2: Technical Analysis of PBB

Step 3 – Entry and Exit

Investing in a good company does not guarantee capital gain for investors. Profits can only be earned if we enter and exit our position at the right timing. Therefore, MQ Trading Strategy is introduced into MQ Trader system in facilitating users to ascertain trading signals (Sell and buy signals) immediately according to technical indicators.

To know more about MQ Trading Strategy, please read Introduction to MQ Trader Trading Strategies.

Figure 3: EMA 5 Crossover on SUPERMX’s Daily Chart.

Step 4 – Backtesting

It is impossible for all stocks to be analysed accurately by using any MQ trading strategies which have different strengths and weaknesses. This is because the trading signals are detected solely based on the quantitative data and mathematical models of each trading strategy. MQ Trader – How to invest in stocks (Part 1)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Wed, 21 Nov 2018, 12:01 PM

Introduction

Investing is a way to grow your existing wealth but it is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Investors do not need to have tons of money to start investment. It can be quite challenging to invest our money wisely and effectively despite there is no shortage of information available in the digital age. This is because excessive information can often be overwhelming if investors do not have a systematic methodology in investment. In this blog post, we will be discussing on how can we earn from investment as an introduction before proceeding to our main topic - MQ Trader stocks investment methodology.

How do we earn from investment?

Investment enables us to earn profits through 2 main approaches:

  1. Interest and dividends from savings or dividend-paying stocks and bonds

Investors are able to earn interest from the saving in most of the trading accounts which is protected by Bank Negara although no transactions have been performed since the account is open. Besides, earning in the form of dividends can contribute to passive income for investors. Normally, profits are distributed by companies to the shareholders by declaring dividends.

  1. Appreciation of value from a stock portfolio, real estate or other assets

Capital appreciation can be one of the channel to earn from investment. It occurs when the shares invested commands a higher price in the market than an investor originally paid for the shares. There can be a general trend for share values to increase including macroeconomics factors such as strong GDP growth and low interest rate. Additionally, a stock price can be boosted when the underlying company is growing faster than analysts expect.

Share markets – primary and secondary

The stock market is divided into two major categories which are primary and secondary market. In the former, securities are issued and eventually listed on the stock exchange, Bursa Malaysia. Normally, new shares are issued to the stock market in the form of initial public offering (IPO). To know more about IPO, please read MQ Trader – Introduction of IPO

Buying and selling securities that are already owned from primary market take place in the secondary market. The price of the shares fluctuates depending on the demand of the market on the shares and it is no longer affected by the issuance price of IPO. This is where investors can earn the capital gain when the share price goes up.

MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing IPO (Part 3)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 13 Nov 2018, 5:00 PM

Introduction

There are 2 types of benchmarks used for evaluating the qualification of a company to be listed on the stock market. They are regulatory benchmark and market benchmark. Regulatory benchmark has been explained in the previous blog post – MQ Trader – The requirement for listing IPO (Part 1). In this article, we will be discussing on market benchmark for listing IPO.

Market Benchmark

The market benchmark for listing has no prescribed set of rules. It is purely driven by market expectations, which are basically the perceived value of a company based on the prospect of the company. In turn, these prospects are premised on the attributes that are important to investors.

These attributes include:

  • The track record of promoters, directors and management of your company
  • A company’s stage of development vs its industry’s business cycle.
  • Your company’s financial performance when compared to other companies of similar business and operations
  • Your company’s position in the industry vs competitors

Generally, these attributes are the main factors that investors take into consideration before investing in a company. Market benchmark is also able to identify whether a company will be attractive to investors if it is listed on Bursa Malaysia.

Conclusion

Meeting the regulatory benchmark alone may not be sufficient to attract an Investment Bank to act as an advisor for a company. By using market benchmark approach, advisors have the responsibility to filter good quality companies that fulfill the market benchmark and able to be accepted by investors to be listed in the market.

Introduction

In this blog post, we will be explaining on the ACE market characteristics and its listing requirements. This article is the continuation of the previous blog post, please read MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing IPO (Part 1) for better understanding.

What is ACE Market?

The ACE Market stands for “Access, Certainty, Efficiency” which is used to replace its former name which is MESDAQ (Malaysian Exchange of Securities Dealing and Automated Quotation) market. MESDAQ which consists of mainly technological stocks, was established in 1997 and it is replaced by ACE Market under Bursa Malaysia today.

ACE Market is known to be an ideal market for start-ups and new companies and it is no longer restricted to technological stocks only. As compared to Main market, it is more open to companies form any sector or size, as the requirements for a company to be listed at ACE Market are less stringent.

Generally, ACE Market is an alternative sponsor-driven market designed for companies of all business sectors that have excellent growth potential.

Listing factors for consideration

The sponsor is a key party that can provide reliable and relevant assessment for judging the suitability of the listing applicant to be listed in ACE Market. Bursa Malaysia will also evaluate the listing proposal to determine whether it is against the public interest. The following qualifications can help a Sponsor to identify the suitability of a company to be listed in ACE market:

  1. Risk Management

A company whose internal control and risk management systems are in place with the company’s business and growth plans.

  1. Good Corporate Governance

A company whose founders, promoters, directors and management team have a good track of record in corporate governance without any conflict of interest with the company.

  1. Growth Prospects

A company with its core business and its industry are anticipated to have a high growth potential within the foreseeable future.

  1. Responsible Directors

A company which its director are fully aware of and understand their obligation

  1. Capable Directors and Management

A company with a leadership team of good standing, high capability to grow the business.

  1. Commitment to Compliance

A company with sufficient systems, procedures, policies, controls and resources to be compliance with the relevant rules and regulations

Companies listed on ACE Market are eligible to apply for transferring to the Main Market if they meet the profit track record required for the Main Market in the future.

Market Benchmark

In the next blog post, we will be discussing on how market benchmark affect the listing of companies in both markets. Kindly visit MQ Trader – The requirements for issuing IPO (Part 3) to continue reading this topic.

MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing IPO (Part 1)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Fri, 2 Nov 2018, 3:52 PM

Introduction

Substantial amount of fund is required for a growing company to be more competitive among other companies in the same sector. The growth of a company can be enhanced by raising fund for expansion of its business through the issuance of IPO.

Suitability of a company to be listed on Bursa Malaysia can be assessed by the aids of professionals. 2 types of benchmarks such as regulatory benchmark and market benchmark are commonly used to assess the qualification of a company to go for public.

In this blog post, we will be discussing on the types of market and regulatory system for issuing an IPO. To understand more about IPO, please read MQ Trader - Introduction of IPO.

Regulatory Benchmark

The regulatory benchmark is a set of prescribed rules under the Securities Commission Malaysia’s (SC) Equity Guidelines and Bursa Malaysia’s Listing Requirement.

This benchmark is categorized into two sets of rules to identify the suitability of a company to be listed either on the Main Market or Ace Market.

Role of Securities Commission (SC)

For Main Market applications, IPO proposals are reviewed by the SC to make sure that they are obeying strictly to the Equity Guidelines. The applicant’s directors and major shareholders are not allowed to get involved in any unfavorable record and corporate governance issues.

The IPO prospectus is also reviewed carefully to ensure that all the key information is disclosed clearly in compliance with the Prospectus Guidelines – Equity and Debt. This action is taken, so as to protect investors for making informed investment decisions.

For Ace Market applications, only prospectus review is taken into consideration.

Main Market

Main market is for listing established companies with a profit track record of 3 to 5 full financial years or companies with a sizable business.

There are a series of criteria has to be fulfilled by a company before it is qualified to be listed on Main Market. The key factors to be taken into account by SC for evaluation are the quality, size, operations, management experience and expertise of a company.

Overall, a company should have the following qualities in order to be listed on the Main Market:

  1. Identifiable Core Business

A company that has majority of control over an identifiable core business which can act as main source of operating revenue or after-tax profit. A core business owning investments in other listed corporations or businesses will not be qualified.

  1. No conflicts of interest

A company that has high ability to solve any situation with conflicts of interest.

  1. Strong Business Prospects

A company that is growing at high rate, possessing sizeable brand equity and market share and staying competitive with a core business that is can generate consistent and profitable return.

  1. Good Management

A company that is managed by experienced people with high qualification.

  1. Good Corporate Governance

A company with strong corporate governance policies and practices.

  1. Healthy Financial Position

A company with positive financial results (i.e. cash flow, profits and revenue) as well as enough working capital for at least 12 months.

Ace Market

Ace Market characteristics and its listing requirement will be further discussed in the next blog post – MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing an IPO (Part 2).

MQ Trader - Introduction of IPO

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 30 Oct 2018, 6:53 PM

What is IPO?

An Initial public offering (IPO) is the first batch of stocks issued by a company to the public in order to raise capital for its business. The public consists of any individual or institutional investor who is interested in buying the shares of this company and wasn’t involved in the early days of the company. To become a public listed company, a company has to sell a certain portion of their shares to the public to be traded on a stock exchange (Bursa Malaysia). This is why an IPO is also referred to as “going public”.

The purpose of IPO

There are various ways for a company to raise capital for growing and expanding its business. IPO is one of the alternatives for a company to raise substantial amount of fund without borrowing loans from the bank which increases the liabilities of the company.

Advantages of IPO

  • Provides the company a lower cost of capital
  • Raises the largest amount of money for the company as compared to other options
  • Increase the company’s exposure to public and reputation which can boost the sales and profits
  • Better Management and skillful employees can be attracted through liquid equity acquisitions (i.e. ESOPs)
  • Higher diversity of investors to raise the capital
  • Encourage and reward loyal and committed employees via an employee equity scheme

Disadvantages of IPO

  • Loss of control over the company, as shareholders have rights to interfere in its business direction and decision
  • Disclosure of financial statement and other business information is required
  • Remarkable legal, accounting and marketing costs
  • The presence of risk if the issuance of IPO fails due to low demand by public
  • Greater effort is needed for reporting

What is the requirement for issuing an IPO?

In the next blog post, we will be discussing on the requirements that a company has to fulfill for issuing an IPO. Please visit MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing IPO (Part 1) to continue reading.

MQ Trader – How to quantify signal quality with MQ Backtesting? [HENGYUAN] (Part 2)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Thu, 18 Oct 2018, 6:54 PM

Introduction

Backtesting is known to be one of the effective ways to access the viability of a trading strategy in predicting the actual results of the share price by applying the trading strategy to historical data. Without a proper tool, backtesting will take ages to be completed, as historical data up to 5 years and above has to be analysed in order to obtain an accurate result. MQ Backtesting is an integrative and comprehensive feature which ultilises high technology to carry out backtesting within seconds. In this blog post, we will be demonstrating how powerful MQ Backtesting is in quantifying the signal quality.

To understand this topic better, please read MQ Trader – How to quantify signal quality with MQ Backtesting?  [HENGYUAN] (Part 1)

Company Background

HENGYUAN is engaged in refining and manufacturing of petroleum products in Malaysia. On the beginning of October 2018, the rising of Brent crude oil price acts as a positive catalyst to most of the oil and gas companies’ share price.

A buy signal was observed on 1 Oct 2018 when EMA 5 Crossover is applied on daily technical chart of HENGYUAN. To confirm the signal’s quality, MQ Backtesting was used to verify the accuracy of the signal.

Background

MQ Signal Backtest service performed Live Backtesting on stock HENGYUAN (4324) based on EMA 5 Crossover Trade Signal and Daily chart duration. Up to 5 years historical data were used for this Live backtesting service.

Test Result

A total of 15 Trade Signals were analyzed. The latest Trade Signal was detected on 03/10/2018. On average, the Backtest result shows that the best performance is achieved on T+1 after trading day with 33% success rate.

Overall, this Trade Signal achieved a MQ Signal Backtest Rating of 0.0/5 stars. This represents a Below Average rating. Traders may wait for other confirmation signals of another chart’s duration, or look for other trade opportunities.

ADX Crossover Daily Chart

Background

MQ Signal Backtest service performed Live Backtesting on stock HENGYUAN (4324) based on ADX Crossover Trade Signal and Daily chart duration. Up to 5 years historical data were used for this Live backtesting service.

Test Result

A total of 15 Trade Signals were analyzed. The latest Trade Signal was detected on 02/10/2018. On average, the Backtest result shows that the best performance is achieved on T+5 after trading day with 66% success rate.

Overall, this Trade Signal achieved a MQ Signal Backtest Rating of 1.3/5 stars. This represents a Below Average rating. Traders may wait for other confirmation signals of another chart’s duration, or look for other trade opportunities

Conclusion

MQ Backtesting on both EMA5 Crossover and ADX Crossover daily charts proves that the buy signal which appeared on 2 Oct 2018 is not strong.  Eventually, the share price of HENGYUAN did not rise sharply within T+10 indicating how reliable MQ Backtesting is to identify the quality of the signals.

There are a lot of buy signals can be observed from the technical charts but not all of them produce high capital gain with high success rate. Hence, MQ Backtesting plays an important role to eliminate the false signals in increasing the winning chance of our investment.

MQ Trader – How to quantify signal quality with MQ Backtesting? [HENGYUAN] (Part 1)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Wed, 17 Oct 2018, 12:26 PM

Introduction

MQ Trading strategies are the key feature of MQ Trader, as they are able to detect the buy and sell signals based on the quantitative data of the stock. However, each trading strategy has their weaknesses leading to false signals might be produced due to the weak sell or buy momentum and the low trading volume. In this topic, we will be discussing on how to identity signals with high quality and accuracy by using HENGYUAN as our case study.

How to identify signals with MQ Trading Strategies

EMA 5 Crossover and ADX Crossover are the most commonly used trading strategies in MQ Trader system, so we will be using both strategies to study technical charts of HENGYUAN in this topic. To know more about EMA 5 Crossover and ADX Crossover, please visit MQ Trader Strategy – EMA 5 Crossover and MQ Trader Strategy  – ADX Crossover respectively.

The daily charts above shows the share price movement of HENGYUAN throughout a year since August 2017. There are several red and green arrows observed indicating the presence of numerous trading signals over the time. However, not all trading signals are able to help traders in earning high profit.

What is low quality signal?

Figure 1: Example of low quality signals in HENGYUAN technical chart

Figure above shows the example of trading signals with low quality in HENGYUAN’s technical chart. Negligible profit can be earned when we trade according to signals with low quality.

How does low quality signal appear?

In fact, MQ Trading Strategies are using a series of calculation to provide traders a good indication of current price trend based on quantitative data of stocks. Trading signals are generated by following a set of rules to determine whether the particular stock is in bullish or bearish trend.

For example, the share price movement is considered as bullish if EMA 5 crosses EMA 20 from bottom. However, the buy signal produced cannot guarantee a sharp increase in share price, as there are much more uncertainties and unknown factors that can affect the share price significantly not taken into account of the trading strategies’ calculation.

Generally, poor quality trading signals are produced because it is impossible for a single trading strategy to be suitable for all types of technical charts, despite of the high accuracy of the trading strategies. Thus, it is important filter the trading signals that can fit into the technical charts of the particular stock to maximize our capital gain with high success rate.

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Mon, 1 Oct 2018, 5:36 PM

MQ Trading strategies are very popular among many users, as they are able to detect buy or sell signals based on quantitative data by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. However, some people might be wondering what is accuracy of trading signals that are generated by MQ trading strategies, as trading signals appear at different period when different trading strategies are used. Besides, different trading strategies utilize different calculation and thus having different level of sensitivity towards the share price.

In this workshop, we are going to introduce our latest feature, backtesting which can improve the accuracy and reliability of MQ trading strategies. Backtesting is a technique used to assess the viability of a trading strategy in predicting the actual results when it is applied to the historical data.
