MQ Trader – Daily Trading Signals

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 18 Dec 2018, 06:12 PM

Introduction

Most people have a hard time to monitor the stocks closely, as our working hours tend to overlap with trading hours. Opportunities might be missed if we are unable to capture the change in share price instantly. MQ Trader system is a powerful tool which can help us to protect our capital and earn profit from the stock market. We can seize the opportunities by trading according to the trading signals generated by MQ Trading Strategy which is discussed in Introduction to MQ Trader Trading Strategy.

In this article, we are going to present one of our key feature, Daily Trading Signal on MQ Trader System to keep track the buy and sell signals of the stocks daily.

What is Daily Trading Signal?

Daily Trading Signal is a screener that filters the stocks with trading signals detected by MQ Trading Strategies such as EMA 5 Crossover, ADX Crossover and etc. The filtered stocks are classified into 2 categories namely “BUY Signals” and “SELL Signals”.

Legends:

Code: Stock Code on Bursa Malaysia

Name: Name of the stock

Signal Time: The time when the buy/sell signal is detected

Duration: Duration of the technical chart (ranging from 5 mins to weekly)

Change: Daily price change

Volume: Trading Volume of the day

Volume MA (60 Days): Volume Moving Average for 60 days. To know more about it, please read MQ Trader – Volume Screener Indicators

There are filters for signal types, duration and volume available to sort out the stocks more specifically:

By using Daily Trading Signal, a list of potential stocks will be obtained systematically within seconds. The buy signal quality can be further confirmed by clicking running MQ Live Backtesting as shown below:

To know more about MQ Live Backtesting, please read MQ Trader – Introduction to Backtesting.

Conclusion

Malaysia market sentiment remains weak at the moment due to various events such as trade tensions between China and US, fluctuation in crude oil price and political issues. However, opportunities always come with risks. Coupling with MQ Live Backtesting, MQ Daily Trading Signal can filter stocks with strong buy signal to increase our winning chance in investment. To learn more about how to invest by using MQ Trader system, you can read MQ Trader – How to invest in stocks (part 1).

MQ Trader – How to invest in stocks (Part 2)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Wed, 5 Dec 2018, 05:59 PM

Introduction

Investment seems to be hard for some investors especially beginners that have very little of knowledge on investment. They might have some concerns on being trapped in a downtrending stock due to exposure to fake or bias information, lack of experiences and etc. This article is the continuation of our previous post - MQ Trader - How to invest in stocks (Part 1).

In this blog post, we will be sharing our MQ Trader Investment Methodology which can act as a guideline for investors to start their investment. Instead of giving you the fish, we would like to teach you how to fish.

MQ Trader Investment Methodology

Step 1 - Stock Info

I3investor.com is a leading stock investment portal, dedicated to independent stock traders and investors. It is a good place to search for potential stocks if you have no idea on what to invest. Popular stocks with trending financial information including the Latest Stocks Discussions, Market Blogs, List of the Most Active Stocks, List of Trending Hot Stocks and etc are available on i3investor.com. It can help us to find out stocks which are actively traded on the stock market, as these stocks usually have high liquidity and trading volume that will not be manipulated by investors easily.

Stock Discussion

Apart from stock info, I3investor.com is also a platform where users can discuss and share their ideas about stock market freely with each other. There are several categories of forum such as stock, news & blogs, announcement & events, watchlist, general, personal finance and timeout available on Social Forum.

Portfolio Management System

This system is one of the benefits that MQ Trader team provides MQ Trader group members to keep track of the portfolio of their trading accounts efficiently and systematically. Free synchronization of trade data to advanced Portfolio Management System will be enabled upon request by MQ Trader group members. Thus, there is no need for users to record their transactions manually.

Step 2 - Stock Analysis

After getting the information of stocks, fundamental and technical analysis of the stocks is required to determine the performance of the company as well as trend of the share price respectively. A powerful and comprehensive tool is a must to carry out stock analysis systematically and efficiently. MQ Trader Stock Analysis system is sponsored by MQ Trader to MQ Trader group members in analyzing a stock fundamentally and technically based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), various technical indicators and quantitative data.

To know more about fundamental and technical analysis provided by MQ Trader, please read MQ Trader – Fundamental Analysis [TOPGLOV] and MQ Trader – Technical Analysis [UNISEM].

Figure 2: Technical Analysis of PBB

Step 3 – Entry and Exit

Investing in a good company does not guarantee capital gain for investors. Profits can only be earned if we enter and exit our position at the right timing. Therefore, MQ Trading Strategy is introduced into MQ Trader system in facilitating users to ascertain trading signals (Sell and buy signals) immediately according to technical indicators.

To know more about MQ Trading Strategy, please read Introduction to MQ Trader Trading Strategies.

Figure 3: EMA 5 Crossover on SUPERMX’s Daily Chart.

Step 4 – Backtesting

It is impossible for all stocks to be analysed accurately by using any MQ trading strategies which have different strengths and weaknesses. This is because the trading signals are detected solely based on the quantitative data and mathematical models of each trading strategy. Hence, MQ Live Backtesting is a powerful tool which is incorporated into MQ Trader system to increase the winning chances of MQ Trading Strategies.

To know more about MQ Live Backtesting, please read MQ Trader - Introduction to Backtesting.

MQ Trader – How to invest in stocks (Part 1)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Wed, 21 Nov 2018, 12:01 PM

Introduction

Investing is a way to grow your existing wealth but it is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Investors do not need to have tons of money to start investment. It can be quite challenging to invest our money wisely and effectively despite there is no shortage of information available in the digital age. This is because excessive information can often be overwhelming if investors do not have a systematic methodology in investment. In this blog post, we will be discussing on how can we earn from investment as an introduction before proceeding to our main topic - MQ Trader stocks investment methodology.

How do we earn from investment?

Investment enables us to earn profits through 2 main approaches:

  1. Interest and dividends from savings or dividend-paying stocks and bonds

Investors are able to earn interest from the saving in most of the trading accounts which is protected by Bank Negara although no transactions have been performed since the account is open. Besides, earning in the form of dividends can contribute to passive income for investors. Normally, profits are distributed by companies to the shareholders by declaring dividends.

  1. Appreciation of value from a stock portfolio, real estate or other assets

Capital appreciation can be one of the channel to earn from investment. It occurs when the shares invested commands a higher price in the market than an investor originally paid for the shares. There can be a general trend for share values to increase including macroeconomics factors such as strong GDP growth and low interest rate. Additionally, a stock price can be boosted when the underlying company is growing faster than analysts expect.

Share markets – primary and secondary

The stock market is divided into two major categories which are primary and secondary market. In the former, securities are issued and eventually listed on the stock exchange, Bursa Malaysia. Normally, new shares are issued to the stock market in the form of initial public offering (IPO). To know more about IPO, please read MQ Trader – Introduction of IPO

Buying and selling securities that are already owned from primary market take place in the secondary market. The price of the shares fluctuates depending on the demand of the market on the shares and it is no longer affected by the issuance price of IPO. This is where investors can earn the capital gain when the share price goes up.

MQ Trader Investment Methodology

Next, we will be walking through the process that is utilized by MQ Trader to look for potential stocks. To continue reading, please proceed to MQ Trader – How to invest in stocks (Part 2).

MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing IPO (Part 3)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 13 Nov 2018, 05:00 PM

Introduction

There are 2 types of benchmarks used for evaluating the qualification of a company to be listed on the stock market. They are regulatory benchmark and market benchmark. Regulatory benchmark has been explained in the previous blog post – MQ Trader – The requirement for listing IPO (Part 1). In this article, we will be discussing on market benchmark for listing IPO.

Market Benchmark

The market benchmark for listing has no prescribed set of rules. It is purely driven by market expectations, which are basically the perceived value of a company based on the prospect of the company. In turn, these prospects are premised on the attributes that are important to investors.

These attributes include:

  • The track record of promoters, directors and management of your company
  • A company’s stage of development vs its industry’s business cycle.
  • Your company’s financial performance when compared to other companies of similar business and operations
  • Your company’s position in the industry vs competitors

Generally, these attributes are the main factors that investors take into consideration before investing in a company. Market benchmark is also able to identify whether a company will be attractive to investors if it is listed on Bursa Malaysia.

Conclusion

Meeting the regulatory benchmark alone may not be sufficient to attract an Investment Bank to act as an advisor for a company. By using market benchmark approach, advisors have the responsibility to filter good quality companies that fulfill the market benchmark and able to be accepted by investors to be listed in the market.

What is ACE Market?

The ACE Market stands for “Access, Certainty, Efficiency” which is used to replace its former name which is MESDAQ (Malaysian Exchange of Securities Dealing and Automated Quotation) market. MESDAQ which consists of mainly technological stocks, was established in 1997 and it is replaced by ACE Market under Bursa Malaysia today.

ACE Market is known to be an ideal market for start-ups and new companies and it is no longer restricted to technological stocks only. As compared to Main market, it is more open to companies form any sector or size, as the requirements for a company to be listed at ACE Market are less stringent.

Generally, ACE Market is an alternative sponsor-driven market designed for companies of all business sectors that have excellent growth potential.

Listing factors for consideration

The sponsor is a key party that can provide reliable and relevant assessment for judging the suitability of the listing applicant to be listed in ACE Market. Bursa Malaysia will also evaluate the listing proposal to determine whether it is against the public interest. The following qualifications can help a Sponsor to identify the suitability of a company to be listed in ACE market:

  1. Risk Management

A company whose internal control and risk management systems are in place with the company’s business and growth plans.

  1. Good Corporate Governance

A company whose founders, promoters, directors and management team have a good track of record in corporate governance without any conflict of interest with the company.

  1. Growth Prospects

A company with its core business and its industry are anticipated to have a high growth potential within the foreseeable future.

  1. Responsible Directors

  1. Capable Directors and Management

A company with a leadership team of good standing, high capability to grow the business.

  1. Commitment to Compliance

A company with sufficient systems, procedures, policies, controls and resources to be compliance with the relevant rules and regulations

Companies listed on ACE Market are eligible to apply for transferring to the Main Market if they meet the profit track record required for the Main Market in the future.

Market Benchmark

In the next blog post, we will be discussing on how market benchmark affect the listing of companies in both markets. Kindly visit MQ Trader – The requirements for issuing IPO (Part 3) to continue reading this topic.

MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing IPO (Part 1)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Fri, 2 Nov 2018, 03:52 PM

Introduction

Substantial amount of fund is required for a growing company to be more competitive among other companies in the same sector. The growth of a company can be enhanced by raising fund for expansion of its business through the issuance of IPO.

Suitability of a company to be listed on Bursa Malaysia can be assessed by the aids of professionals. 2 types of benchmarks such as regulatory benchmark and market benchmark are commonly used to assess the qualification of a company to go for public.

In this blog post, we will be discussing on the types of market and regulatory system for issuing an IPO. To understand more about IPO, please read MQ Trader - Introduction of IPO.

Regulatory Benchmark

The regulatory benchmark is a set of prescribed rules under the Securities Commission Malaysia’s (SC) Equity Guidelines and Bursa Malaysia’s Listing Requirement.

This benchmark is categorized into two sets of rules to identify the suitability of a company to be listed either on the Main Market or Ace Market.

Role of Securities Commission (SC)

For Main Market applications, IPO proposals are reviewed by the SC to make sure that they are obeying strictly to the Equity Guidelines. The applicant’s directors and major shareholders are not allowed to get involved in any unfavorable record and corporate governance issues.

The IPO prospectus is also reviewed carefully to ensure that all the key information is disclosed clearly in compliance with the Prospectus Guidelines – Equity and Debt. This action is taken, so as to protect investors for making informed investment decisions.

For Ace Market applications, only prospectus review is taken into consideration.

Main Market

Main market is for listing established companies with a profit track record of 3 to 5 full financial years or companies with a sizable business.

There are a series of criteria has to be fulfilled by a company before it is qualified to be listed on Main Market. The key factors to be taken into account by SC for evaluation are the quality, size, operations, management experience and expertise of a company.

Overall, a company should have the following qualities in order to be listed on the Main Market:

  1. Identifiable Core Business

A company that has majority of control over an identifiable core business which can act as main source of operating revenue or after-tax profit. A core business owning investments in other listed corporations or businesses will not be qualified.

  1. No conflicts of interest

A company that has high ability to solve any situation with conflicts of interest.

  1. Strong Business Prospects

A company that is growing at high rate, possessing sizeable brand equity and market share and staying competitive with a core business that is can generate consistent and profitable return.

  1. Good Management

A company that is managed by experienced people with high qualification.

  1. Good Corporate Governance

A company with strong corporate governance policies and practices.

  1. Healthy Financial Position

A company with positive financial results (i.e. cash flow, profits and revenue) as well as enough working capital for at least 12 months.

Ace Market

Ace Market characteristics and its listing requirement will be further discussed in the next blog post – MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing an IPO (Part 2).

MQ Trader - Introduction of IPO

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 30 Oct 2018, 06:53 PM

What is IPO?

An Initial public offering (IPO) is the first batch of stocks issued by a company to the public in order to raise capital for its business. The public consists of any individual or institutional investor who is interested in buying the shares of this company and wasn’t involved in the early days of the company. To become a public listed company, a company has to sell a certain portion of their shares to the public to be traded on a stock exchange (Bursa Malaysia). This is why an IPO is also referred to as “going public”.

The purpose of IPO

There are various ways for a company to raise capital for growing and expanding its business. IPO is one of the alternatives for a company to raise substantial amount of fund without borrowing loans from the bank which increases the liabilities of the company.

Advantages of IPO

  • Provides the company a lower cost of capital
  • Raises the largest amount of money for the company as compared to other options
  • Increase the company’s exposure to public and reputation which can boost the sales and profits
  • Better Management and skillful employees can be attracted through liquid equity acquisitions (i.e. ESOPs)
  • Higher diversity of investors to raise the capital
  • Encourage and reward loyal and committed employees via an employee equity scheme

Disadvantages of IPO

  • Loss of control over the company, as shareholders have rights to interfere in its business direction and decision
  • Disclosure of financial statement and other business information is required
  • Remarkable legal, accounting and marketing costs
  • The presence of risk if the issuance of IPO fails due to low demand by public
  • Greater effort is needed for reporting

What is the requirement for issuing an IPO?

In the next blog post, we will be discussing on the requirements that a company has to fulfill for issuing an IPO. Please visit MQ Trader – The requirement for issuing IPO (Part 1) to continue reading.

MQ Trader – How to quantify signal quality with MQ Backtesting? [HENGYUAN] (Part 2)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Thu, 18 Oct 2018, 06:54 PM

Introduction

Backtesting is known to be one of the effective ways to access the viability of a trading strategy in predicting the actual results of the share price by applying the trading strategy to historical data. Without a proper tool, backtesting will take ages to be completed, as historical data up to 5 years and above has to be analysed in order to obtain an accurate result. MQ Backtesting is an integrative and comprehensive feature which ultilises high technology to carry out backtesting within seconds. In this blog post, we will be demonstrating how powerful MQ Backtesting is in quantifying the signal quality.

To understand this topic better, please read MQ Trader – How to quantify signal quality with MQ Backtesting?  [HENGYUAN] (Part 1)

Company Background

HENGYUAN is engaged in refining and manufacturing of petroleum products in Malaysia. On the beginning of October 2018, the rising of Brent crude oil price acts as a positive catalyst to most of the oil and gas companies’ share price.

Background

MQ Signal Backtest service performed Live Backtesting on stock HENGYUAN (4324) based on ADX Crossover Trade Signal and Daily chart duration. Up to 5 years historical data were used for this Live backtesting service.

Test Result

A total of 15 Trade Signals were analyzed. The latest Trade Signal was detected on 02/10/2018. On average, the Backtest result shows that the best performance is achieved on T+5 after trading day with 66% success rate.

Overall, this Trade Signal achieved a MQ Signal Backtest Rating of 1.3/5 stars. This represents a Below Average rating. Traders may wait for other confirmation signals of another chart’s duration, or look for other trade opportunities

Conclusion

MQ Backtesting on both EMA5 Crossover and ADX Crossover daily charts proves that the buy signal which appeared on 2 Oct 2018 is not strong.  Eventually, the share price of HENGYUAN did not rise sharply within T+10 indicating how reliable MQ Backtesting is to identify the quality of the signals.

There are a lot of buy signals can be observed from the technical charts but not all of them produce high capital gain with high success rate. Hence, MQ Backtesting plays an important role to eliminate the false signals in increasing the winning chance of our investment.

MQ Trader – How to quantify signal quality with MQ Backtesting? [HENGYUAN] (Part 1)

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Wed, 17 Oct 2018, 12:26 PM

Introduction

MQ Trading strategies are the key feature of MQ Trader, as they are able to detect the buy and sell signals based on the quantitative data of the stock. However, each trading strategy has their weaknesses leading to false signals might be produced due to the weak sell or buy momentum and the low trading volume. In this topic, we will be discussing on how to identity signals with high quality and accuracy by using HENGYUAN as our case study.

How to identify signals with MQ Trading Strategies

EMA 5 Crossover and ADX Crossover are the most commonly used trading strategies in MQ Trader system, so we will be using both strategies to study technical charts of HENGYUAN in this topic. To know more about EMA 5 Crossover and ADX Crossover, please visit MQ Trader Strategy – EMA 5 Crossover and MQ Trader Strategy  – ADX Crossover respectively.

The daily charts above shows the share price movement of HENGYUAN throughout a year since August 2017. There are several red and green arrows observed indicating the presence of numerous trading signals over the time. However, not all trading signals are able to help traders in earning high profit.

What is low quality signal?

Figure 1: Example of low quality signals in HENGYUAN technical chart

Figure above shows the example of trading signals with low quality in HENGYUAN’s technical chart. Negligible profit can be earned when we trade according to signals with low quality.

How does low quality signal appear?

In fact, MQ Trading Strategies are using a series of calculation to provide traders a good indication of current price trend based on quantitative data of stocks. Trading signals are generated by following a set of rules to determine whether the particular stock is in bullish or bearish trend.

For example, the share price movement is considered as bullish if EMA 5 crosses EMA 20 from bottom. However, the buy signal produced cannot guarantee a sharp increase in share price, as there are much more uncertainties and unknown factors that can affect the share price significantly not taken into account of the trading strategies’ calculation.

Generally, poor quality trading signals are produced because it is impossible for a single trading strategy to be suitable for all types of technical charts, despite of the high accuracy of the trading strategies. Thus, it is important filter the trading signals that can fit into the technical charts of the particular stock to maximize our capital gain with high success rate.

MQ Trader – Introduction to Backtesting

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Tue, 25 Sep 2018, 05:43 PM

Introduction

MQ Trading strategies are very popular among many users, as they are able to detect buy or sell signals based on quantitative data by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Different trading strategies have different calculation and thus having different level of sensitivity towards the share price. To know more about MQ trading strategy, you can refer to Introduction to MQ Trader Trading Strategy.

Some people might be wondering what is accuracy of trading signals that are generated by MQ trading strategies, as trading signals appear at different period when different trading strategies are used. In this topic, we are going to introduce our latest feature, backtesting to all of you. Backtesting is a technique used to assess the viability of a trading strategy in predicting the actual results when it is applied to the historical data.

How does backtesting work?

Backtesting offers investors to evaluate and optimise trading strategies and analytical models before they are implemented in the investment. As mentioned earlier, not all trading strategies work well on all stocks’ technical charts, as different trading strategies has varying characteristics and sensitivity towards market sentiments and momentum. Hence, a trading strategy is used to backtest the historical data of a stock to determine whether it work well in the past or not.

Challenge of Backtesting

Traders must come out with their strategies and test them with a good faith by avoiding bias in the process. Thus, the developed strategy should not be dependent on the historical data. This requirement is extremely hard to be fulfilled, as traders literally construct the strategies according to the historical data. At the meantime, they have to be very strict on the strategy when it is tested with different sets of data to evaluate the reliability of the result.

It is impossible to perform backtesting without any tool (i.e. software), as it will take ages to test the strategies with as much historical data as possible for the past few years. Backtesting becomes even more complicated if many trading strategies that traders propose are not valid leading to endless trial and error has to be performed.

Besides, data dredging might arise if a wide range of hypothetical strategies are tested against the same set of data. In certain cases, they show successful result but in fact they fail to do so in the real-time market. The main reason for the failure is contributed by the situation where many invalid strategies beat the market over a certain time period by chance.

MQ Backtesting

Automated backtesting that can replace the boring and tedious manual backtesting is now available in MQ Trader system. MQ Trader system provides several potential and reliable trading strategies (i.e. EMA 5 Crossover, ADX Crossover, MACD and RSI) to be tested with all the stocks in the market by using MQ backtesting. The backtesting result with various success rates can be viewed instantly by just simply a click in MQ Trader system. MQ Backtesting will be explained in details in the following blog post – MQ Trader – How to quantify signal quality with MQ Backtesting? [HENGYUAN] (Part 1).

MQ Trader – Risk Management of Margin Account

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Mon, 24 Sep 2018, 05:40 PM

Introduction

Margin trading has gained popularity recently, as it provides several benefits to traders due to the compounding effect on the investment returns. However, many investors are remaining cautious in margin trading, as high margin debt can be incurred if it is not used wisely. Hence, risks management is an important skill to help investors to reap the benefits from margin trading.

To read the previous relevant post, please visit MQ Trader - Risk of Margin Account.

Risk Management

Looking for Short-term Opportunistic Trading

Long-term or buy-and-hold strategy is not recommended for margin trading, as the accumulated interest charges can be significantly high over the time resulting in relatively lower profits to be earned. “Fast in fast out” strategy should be used in highly potential bullish stocks instead to maximize the profits with negligible interest charges.

Avoid using the maximum leverage

It is not necessary for investors to use the maximum available leverage for investment, as stock market does not go how according to our anticipation all the time. Some breathing room should be provided so as to protect our capital.

Diversification of portfolio

We should not “put all the eggs into a single basket” to avoid the serious impact contributed by a drastic fall of the share price of a single share.  Putting a large margined position in a single stock is dangerous, as any number of events is possible to plunge the share price instantly.

Close Portfolio Monitoring

Investors have to pay high attention to the news that may bring negative effect to the share price, so as to cut loss before the share price plunge to the extremely low price.

Monitoring Our Position with MQ Trader Stock Analysis System

MQ fundamental analysis and MQ technical analysis with rating system which is the key feature of MQ Trader System enables us to identify the bullish stocks with good fundamentals instantly. This feature can help investors to grab good opportunities for earning profits by using margin facility. To know more about MQ fundamental analysis and MQ technical analysis, please read MQ Trader - Fundamental Analysis [TOPGLOV] and MQ Trader - Technical Analysis [UNISEM].

MQ Trader system provides several trading strategies such as EMA 5 Crossover, ADX Crossover, MACD and RSI, Guppy MMA and OBV which are able to detect buy and sell signals based on quantitative data. These trading signals are not influenced by human’s bias and emotion resulting in more accurate interpretation of market sentiments and momentum. You can refer to MQ Trader – Portfolio Protection Strategy (Part 1) to know how we can protect our capital in bearish market by using MQ trading strategies.

Conclusion

Investment always involves certain extent of risk but it can generate profit with compounding effect if we know how to manage our risk. MQ Trader system can help to minimize the risk, as it can analyse the technical charts much quicker than a human could. Thus, it can help us to enter and exit from our position before the share price rise and drop respectively.

MQ Trader – Risk of Margin Account

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Fri, 21 Sep 2018, 05:48 PM

Introduction

A margin account is generally used by investors to leverage their investments and scale up their purchasing power. At the meantime, trading with a margin account can magnify losses which create higher risk than conventional trading accounts do.  In this topic, we will be explaining on what potential; risk that can arise from trading with a margin account.

To have a better understanding on a margin account, please proceed to MQ Trader – Benefits of Margin Account.

Risks of Margin Account

The double-edged sword of leverage

Margin trading can magnify your losses as dramatically as it can boost the profits earned.

Here is the example if the share price of a purchased stock drops:

Margin Call

Margin call is a dreadful risk that can be contributed by margin call. One of the main factors that cause a margin call is the decrement of stock value leading to drastic fall of equity to the level below the marginal ratio required by the broker. Therefore, investors will be notified to pump in sufficient amount of cash or paid securities to maintain the minimum marginal ratio of 30% in addition to the 50% initial margin requirement. This is the time when the risk comes in if traders are unable to fulfill the minimum marginal ratio requirement.

Forced Liquidation

Margined securities will be sold immediately without further notice if investors are unable to meet a margin call. Forced liquidation can create a substantial amount of losses especially in a bearish market when the securities are disposed at an undesirable price.

Interest Charged

Despite of lower interest rate of a margin account as compared to other collateral accounts, the interest charged can be added up to create huge losses like a snowball effect over the time. Besides, the effect can be even serious if the interest rate rises, as interest rate can fluctuate when the investor has margin debt. Hence, it can increase the interest burden of the investors in a rising interest rate condition.

Close Portfolio Monitoring

The possible risks as mentioned above force investors to have much closer portfolio monitoring from time to time. This can lead to higher stress to investors which may affect their performance in their daily routine. Thus, risk management for trading with a margin account is very important to be practiced, so as to avoid big losses in investment.

In the next blog post, we will be discussing on the methods that can be taken to minimize the risks of a margin account. Please stay tuned for MQ Trader – Risk Management of Margin Account.

MQ Trader – Benefits of Margin Account

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Thu, 20 Sep 2018, 03:37 PM

What is Margin Account?

A margin account is a brokerage account which the broker lends the customer cash to buy securities. The loan in the account is usually collateralized by the securities purchased and cash and an interest will be charged when the margin facility is used. By using margin accounts, customers are using leverage in investing with the borrowed money which will magnify the returns from investment.

Benefits of Margin Account

Low interest rate

Most of the brokers provide interest rate ranging from 4% to 8% annually which is much lower than the interest rate (10% annually) incurred in collateral trading accounts. Therefore, it is a cheaper option for those who are looking for borrowing at a lower interest rate with high returns.

Purchasing dividend stocks can be a good way to offset the interest of a margin account. Thus, you can be benefited from the leveraged profits as well as the dividends distributed by the company.

Leverage gains & Lower Capital Investment

A margin account enables traders to leverage gains by having higher purchasing power to buy more shares than traders could if a cash-only basis trading account is used. Here’s an example to compare the return obtained from two trading accounts (With and Without margin facility):

Without Margin

With Margin

Cash available

100,000

100,000

Margin Loan (50%)

10

Shares purchased

10,000

20,000

Total Outlay

100,000

200,000

When the share price increases by RM5 after 6 months, the profit gained from both accounts are as shown below:

Without Margin

Thus, a margin account allows traders to take advantage from trading opportunities by doubling the profits earned when the share price is in bullish trend. Moreover, lower capital is required to obtain the same amount of profits that you could earn from a conventional trading account.

Longer settlement Days

Unlike other conventional trading accounts which traders have to settle their outstanding shares within 3 trading days, a margin account does not restrict traders to settle their outstanding shares within a fixed period. Traders can hold the shares until the share price meet their expectation before they decided to exit from their position.

Diversifying portfolio

A margin account enables traders to diversify their portfolio, as traders are given higher purchasing power to purchase more shares. For example, if your cash upfront account is too concentrated in a few stocks or sectors, your margin account allows you to add position in other stocks or sectors to diversifying your portfolio.

What are the risks?

In our next blog post, we will be discussing on the risks of trading with a margin account and how we can mitigate the risks arisen from it. Please visit MQ Trader – Risk of Margin Account for more information.

MQ Trader – Technical Indicators (Part 4) [UNISEM]

Author: MQTrader Jesse   |  Publish date: Thu, 6 Sep 2018, 03:45 PM

Introduction

In this article, we will be explaining on the last 2 technical indicators which are stochastic oscillator and average directional index (ADX) that are used in MQ Technical Analysis. This post is the continuation of the previous post, so it is recommended for you to read our previous post – MQ Trader – Technical Indicators (Part 3) [UNISEM] to have a better understanding on this topic.

MQ Technical Indicators

  1. Stochastic Oscillator

The Stochastic Oscillator is a momentum indicator that shows the location of the close relative to the high-low range over a set number of periods. As a rule, the momentum changes direction before price. As such, bullish and bearish divergences in the Stochastic Oscillator can be used to foreshadow reversals.

Calculation of stochastic oscillator:

%K = 100(C - L14)/(H14 - L14)

Where:

C = the most recent closing price

L14 = the low of the 14 previous trading sessions

H14 = the highest price traded during the same 14-day period

%K= the current market rate for the currency pair

%D = 3-period moving average of %K

The oscillator ranges from zero to one hundred. Traditional settings use 80 as the overbought threshold and 20 as the oversold threshold.

Bullish: when the fast stochastic oscillator (Stoch %K) crosses above the slow stochastic oscillator (Stoch %D) and it is in the oversold (below 20) treshold

Bearish: when Stoch %K crosses below Stoch %D and it is in the overbought (above 80) threshold

Figure 1: Stochastic Oscillator in UNISEM’s daily technical chart

To filter the noise of stochastic oscillator, D% and K% are multiplied with 3 days moving averages to obtain D% 3MA and D% respectively to form smoother curves as shown in Figure 1.

According to Figure 1, the fast stochastic oscillator (Stoch %K) crosses above the slow stochastic oscillator (Stoch %D) but its value is 73.976 which is lesser than 80. Hence, UNISEM’s share price movement is rated as neutral with the trend more towards to bullish at the moment.

  1. Average Directional Index (ADX)

The Average Directional Index (ADX) is used to determine when price is trending strongly. In many cases, it is the ultimate trend indicator. Trading in the direction of a strong trend reduces risk and increases profit potential. To know more about ADX, kindly read MQ Trader Strategy - ADX Crossover.

Bullish: when Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) is above Minus Directional Indicator (-DI) and ADX is more than 25

Bearish: when Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) is below Minus Directional Indicator (-DI) and ADX is more than 25

Source: MQ Trader Stock Analysis System

Figure 2: ADX in UNISEM’s daily technical chart

Figure 2 shows that the +DI crosses above –DI while ADX reached 20.47 which is lower than 25, so it is categorized as neutral with the trend is more towards bullish range.

For accessing to the technical chart in MQ Trader system, you can visit ADX Technical Chart.

Conclusion

Technical indicators are very important to predict the future share price by using the historical data, as there are many case studies that have been proven that history always repeats itself. However, it is impossible for us to have technical analysis on the hundreds of shares daily to identify the shares with bullish trend. Thus, both MQ technical screener and MQ Technical Rating play vital roles in filtering the shares with bullish trend within seconds. For more information, you can read MQ Trader – Technical Screener for Up-trending Stocks and MQ Trader – Technical Analysis [UNISEM] for understanding how technical screener and technical rating works in MQ Trader stock analysis system.
