MOH to study fixed medicine price plan

KUALA SELANGOR: The Health Ministry is prepared to study a proposal for a fixed price benchmark on medicine and pharmaceutical supplies in the future.

Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the proposal, which he described as good, should be given consideration to ensure health costs and expenditure will not burden the public.

“I will pay attention to the proposal, ’’ he said after launching a circumcision ceremony at An-Nur Endowment Clinic, Nurul Iman Mosque, Ijok, yesterday.

Insurance and Takaful industries had suggested the ministry study the possibility of fixing a benchmark for the prices of medicine and pharmaceutical supplies to address increasing health cost.

They pointed out that RM60.147bil was spent on healthcare last year with 52% borne by the government and 35% by households.

The rest was borne by the private sector including insurance companies (7%), corporations (4%) and other agencies (2%).

Insurance and Takaful industries also warned of an increase in medical insurance and health premiums if the cost of healthcare was not controlled.

Meanwhile, the charity circumcision yesterday was jointly organised by KPJ Selangor Specialist Hospital, Pertubuhan Sosial Orang Kuala Selangor and the Selangor Tithe Board. — Bernama
