Despite slow start, 80 pct of Kedah's adult population now fully-vaccinated

ALOR STAR: After a slow start, Kedah has finally achieved 80 per cent Covid-19 inoculation for its adult population while vaccination for its adolescent population is proceeding smoothly, with nearly 90 per cent having received their first vaccine dose.

Based on data obtained from Health Ministry's CovidNow portal, 1.29 million or 80.7 per cent of Kedahans aged 18 and above have completed their second dose of the vaccine as of Wednesday, while another 47,730 adults have taken their first jabs.

This leaves nearly 250,000 people or 16 per cent of the eligible adult population in the state yet to be vaccinated.

Kedah is one of the states with the lowest vaccination rates for its adults population.

Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor recently attributed the slow start to a lack of vaccine supply after the national vaccination programme was rolled out in February.

However, Covid-19 vaccination for its adolescent population aged between 12 and 17 is running at an admirable pace, with 87.8 per cent or 185,524 teenagers having received their first dose since the programme was rolled out early last month.

Kedah Health and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Hayati Othman said the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination outreach programme will be continued.

"Some of the districts in Kedah have reached up to 100 and 90 per cent complete vaccination for the adult and elderly population, so our focus now is on rural districts such as Pendang, Sik and Baling.

"In Pendang for example, we have covered some 28 villages under the outreach programme and we will continue this initiative in other rural districts to vaccinate as many eligible recipients as possible," he told the New Straits Times.

He said the outreach programme also covered sekolah pondok (private religious schools) scattered all over the state.

"We will continue to engage the sekolah pondok administrators. So far, we are getting good response from them under the outreach programme," he added.

Dr Hayati said he believed that with the limitation of access into mosques, government facilities and private premises imposed on those who are unvaccinated, more people would eventually come forward to get their vaccine injection, expect for those with health issues.

He added that several vaccination centres in Kedah have ceased operations after the state reached the 80 per cent adult vaccination rate, as per an agreement with the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.

"For adults who wish to get their vaccination injection, they can just walk into the nearest Health Ministry's health clinic. For secondary school students, we will continue providing the jabs at their respective schools," he said.

On a related development, Dr Hayati said the Dewan Al-Farabi Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) in Alor Star has been closed.

He said this is in tandem with lower new daily Covid-19 infection cases recorded in the state lately while many Covid-19 patients are placed under home surveillance as they do not develop severe symptoms.

Only two other PKRCs in Dewan Wawasan, Jitra and the Health Ministry Training Institute in Kulim are still operational.

"The Dewan Wawasan PKRC has been upgraded to accommodate up to 400 patients to treat patients under category three and four while Covid-19 patients under category five are admitted to hospitals.

"The closure of Dewan Al-Farabi PKRC is a crucial milestone in our war against Covid-19, in line with lower daily infection cases recorded lately while most of the patients are placed under home surveillance as they do not show severe symptoms," he said.
