Sabah PAS agrees that GRS should be registered as a political party

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah PAS supports the idea to register the ruling state coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) as a political party.

Sabah PAS secretary Dr Aliakbar Gulasan said that people supported the ten-party coalition in the September 2020 state election and it was important that the mandate of the people is maintained in light of political developments in Peninsular Malaysia.

"This political understanding under GRS must be maintained because political differences are emerging among parties at Federal level as well as some states in the peninsula.

"The GRS government has proven to be friendly to the people, especially when facing difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"PAS welcomes the proposal to officially register GRS because it is the best step to ensure harmony and moderation in Sabah politics," he said in a statement on Thursday (Nov 25).

His statement comes after former chief minister Datuk Seri Salleh Tun Said Keruak made a similar call for the registration of GRS to avoid clashes between political partners following the recently concluded Melaka state election.

GRS comprises four-party Barisan Nasional (Umno, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah, MCA and MIC), five-party Perikatan Nasional (Bersatu, Sabah STAR, Sabah Progressive Party, PAS and Gerakan) and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).

Salleh, who is also GRS Backbenchers Club chairman, said this could avoid a similar situation in Melaka where Barisan and Perikatan contested against each other.

Talk of registering GRS, which has comfortable control of 50 out of the 78 seats in the state assembly, has been going on since before the Melaka election, but there has been some opposition towards the idea by a few coalition partners.

GRS toppled the Warisan Plus state government led by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal in the September 2020 snap election. Warisan is currently working on its own opposition platform while its former partners Pakatan Harapan (PKR, DAP, Amanah and Upko) are also keeping to their own agenda.
