We all understand Azmin’s ‘background’, says Anwar

Author:   |    Publish date:

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president and PM-in-waiting Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim appears unfazed over his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali’s call for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to complete a full term as premier.

“It’s okay, we all understand his (Azmin’s) background, ” he cryptically quipped.

According to Anwar, the choice of prime minister depends on the ruling party, as Malaysia practises the parliamentary democracy system.

“I have spoken about this and in a parliamentary democracy system, the decision is up to the ruling party.

“This means that I leave it to the Pakatan Harapan council, ” the Port Dickson MP told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday (Oct 23).

On Tuesday (Oct 22), Azmin, who’s also Economic Affairs Minister, told reporters in Parliament that Dr Mahathir should be allowed to complete a full term as premier to “respect the people’s wishes”.

Azmin also denied there was an agreement on a set date for Anwar to take over as prime minister.

“So, if there are any parties which want to change the government earlier, within one or two years, that is the real meaning of a backdoor government, ” Azmin had said.

His remarks came a week after he was seen enjoying coffee with Anwar, which downplayed speculation that there was a rift between the two.

Asked if the issue of premiership was discussed when the duo had coffee last week, Anwar merely said “no”.

Anwar had previously said that he had discussed the transition plan with Dr Mahathir, but noted that the exact date was not decided.

Asked to comment on DAP central executive committee member Ronnie Liu’s remarks that Pakatan would still be able to form the government without Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, Dr Mahathir’s party, Anwar said, “That is his (Liu’s) own view”.

“Again, that is his own view. My view is that Pakatan consists of PKR, DAP, Parti Amanah Negara and Bersatu.

“Bersatu thus far has been playing a positive role, and is an important component in Pakatan, ” he said.

Liu had said that if Pakatan breaks up because of Dr Mahathir’s refusal to hand over the premiership to Anwar, Bersatu would have the most to lose.

He had also pointed out that while Bersatu has 26 MPs, DAP, PKR, Amanah, Warisan and Upko collectively have 113 seats in Parliament, which is enough to form a simple majority.
