Dr Zahran brings over 28 years experience in academia and industry. He started his academic career at Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1978, pioneering the country's first Computer Science programme. He then joined the University of Waikato, New Zealand, heading the Artificial Intelligence section and at times, acting as the Departmental Head. In 1993, he returned to join the pioneering staff of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak as a Professor and the Foundation Dean of the Faculty of IT, and later as the Director of the Institute of Software Technology.

In the last 8 years, Dr Zahran served in the corporate sector, first as CEO of an IT subsidiary and Group CTO of a public-listed company, and later through the running of his own company. In his consulting practice, he has conducted technology assessments, managed software development, established new businesses, and undertook various IT projects.
