Datuk Zalekha began her career in the Malaysian civil service in 1977, as an Assistant Director, in the Training and Career Development division of the Public Service Department. She continued to serve the Government in numerous Ministries including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Welfare, Ministry of National Unity and Social Development prior to commencement of her career in the Ministry of Finance (MOF) in 1998 as the Senior Assistant Director of the Budget
Division.

She has since then continued to serve the MOF in various capacities. Datuk Zalekha was attached to the Government Procurement Management Division of the MOF for 7 years before taking up her current appointment as the Deputy Secretary General (Operation) in MOF.
