Working Experience
Datuk Ali is currently Chairman of several public listed companies in Malaysia.

He is currently a Trustee of Labuan Offshore Financial Services Authority, the Force of Nature Aid Foundation, the Yayasan Kadir & Fatimah and the Yayasan Amal Bukit Bintang. He is honorary Advisor (Malaysian Chapter) to the Institute of Chartered Accountants In England & Wales, honorary Fellow of ICSA (UK) and the Malaysian Institute of Directors. He is currently an Adjunct Professor with University Malaya.

Previously he was appointed by the Minister of Finance as the Chairman of the Securities Commission (SC) of Malaysia on 1st March 1999. During his tenure, Datuk Ali launched the Capital Market Masterplan (CMMP), a strategic blueprint that charts the long-term development of the capital market, and chaired the Capital Market Advisory Council, which is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the CMMP. Datuk Ali was a member of a number of national committees including the Foreign Investment Committee (FIC), the Oversight Committee of the National Asset Management Company (Danaharta) and was also a trustee of the Financial Reporting Foundation.

Datuk Ali was also actively involved in international regulatory circles. During his tenure in the SC, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), Chairman of IOSCO’s Asia-Pacific Regional Committee and chaired the Islamic Capital Market Task Force. In addition, Datuk Ali was also a Trustee of the Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI). He was the Consultant to the Sri Lanka Securities and Exchange Commission in 2006 for their Capital Market Strategic Plan.

Prior to his appointment as the Chairman of SC, Datuk Ali was the Executive Chairman and Partner of Ernst & Young and its predecessor firms from 1975 – 1999, and Senior Advisor from March 2004 -2005. He was also former President of the Malaysian Association of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA, now known as the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants), and chaired the MICPA’s Executive Committee and the Insolvency Practices Committee. He also co-chaired the Company Law Forum.

Datuk Ali is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), having started his career in accounting in 1969 and qualifying as a member of the institute in 1974 and elevated to Fellowship in 1976. Ali received the Diploma of Marketing from Institute of Marketing, UK in 1972 and Diploma O&M from Institute of Administrative Management, UK in 1973. He has been a member of MICPA since 1975 and of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants since 1976. He was awarded the Pingat Jasa Negara (PJN) which carries the title “Datuk” by YAM Yang DiPertuan Agong in 2001.

Datuk Ali had co-founded the accounting firm of Lim, Ali & Co. in 1977 and merged it with Arthur Young & Company in 1980 and later Ernst & Whiny in 1990, to finally form the firm of Ernst & Young. In his early years of practice, he had presented papers in various national level seminars.
