Mr Soon started his professional career with KPMG Peat Marwick (now known as KPMG) from 1981 to 1988 during which he acquired his professional qualifications. Mr Soon joined the Hong Leong Group of Companies in 1988 and became the Group Financial Controller of Malaysian Pacific Industries Berhad in 1993. Shortly thereafter in 1994, he was promoted to become the Group Financial Controller of Hong Leong Industries Berhad ["HLI"] Group of Companies. From 2001 to 2005, he was appointed the Group Financial Controller of both HLI and Hume Industries Berhad.

He is presently the Executive Director and Group Chief Financial Officer of Hap Seng Hap Seng Plantations Holdings Berhad, Hap Seng Consolidated Berhad and Malaysian Mosaics Berhad.
