YBhg Dato’ Mohamad Idris joined Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) in February 1976 as a Petroleum Engineer with the Production Department. In the ensuing years, he served as the Production Manager from 1977-80 and was later seconded to Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas, having served as the Deputy General manager, Technical from 1980 to1984, General Manager from 1984 to 1989 and Chief Executive Officer from 1989 to 2000. He was appointed Senior Vice President and Board Member of Petronas from 1 October 1993 until his retirement on 30 September 2002. He was also Advisor to the Exploration and Production Business for another year.

YBhg Dato’ Mohamad Idris also sat as a member on the Board of the Premier Oil plc from 1999 to 2003, a company listed on the London Stock Exchange; as Chairman of the Board of Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company Ltd in Sudan from 1997 to 2002; as Chairman of Energy Africa Ltd, South Africa, from 1999 to 2004, and on the board of various Petronas subsidiaries and associate companies in Malaysia and overseas.

YBhg Dato’ Mohamad Idris was the Chairman of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Asia Pacific from 1995 to 2004 and now continues to serve as a Board Member of the Society.

YBhg Dato’ Mohamad Idris also sits on the Energy Advisory Board, Stone Bond Technologies, a technology company based in Houston, Texas, United States of America

YBhg Dato’ Mohamad Idris was appointed an Independent Non-Executive Director of KNM Group Berhad on 23 February 2006 and subsequently elected Independent Non-Executive Chairman on 23 August 2006.
