He completed his study as a qualified teacher in Gaya Teachers College, Kota Kinabalu in 1978 and posted as teacher to Sekolah Menengah Kerajaan Majakir, Papar Sabah in 1978, Sekolah Menengah Jitra, Alor Setar in 1980, Sekolah Menengah Tunku Abdul Rahman, Alor Setar, Kedah in 1982 and Sekolah Menengah Keat Hwa, Alor Setar in 1986. He was seconded to the Road Safety Council under the Ministry of Road Transport Malaysia from 1987 to 1992.

In 1992, he left the Road Safety Council to set up his own business under the name of Baris Enterprise, a sole-proprietorship involved in the printing and publication activities. In 1993, he set up IBF International, a sole-proprietorship involved in the event management services. He was elected as Chairman for Persatuan Pedagang Dan Pengusaha Melayu Malaysia for the state of Kedah for a term of 2 year from 2003 to 2004.
