He holds Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Trinity University, Texas, USA. He also holds a Master's in Business Administration Degree from Morehead State University, Kentucky, USA in 1983.

He worked in Citibank N.A. from 1983 to 1987, where he worked in the World Corporate Group, a division within the Corporate Banking Group. He worked in United Asian Bank from 1987 to 1990 where he was responsible for starting and heading the Treasury Marketing Unit and in the merged entity with Bank of Commerce Berhad where he was the Vice President of Priority Banking Division from 1990 to 1994 and in Citibank from 1994 to 1995 where he was the Vice President and Head of the Public Sector Unit.
