From 1972 to 1976, and from 1978 to 1983, Dato' Lim Cheng Poh ("Dato' Lim") worked in Malaysia for a firm of Mining Engineers and Consultants (Osborne & Chappel International) in various capacities. He started as a mining engineer and eventually was made a shareholder and an executive director. He has also worked in various consulting assignments both in Malaysia and overseas (Myanmar, New Zealand, Brazil, etc).

Dato' Lim joined the Hong Leong Group Malaysia in 1983 as the Managing Director for Hong Leong Credit Berhad. Over the next 11 years, he served the group in various capacities. At various times, he was in charge of the Group's Insurance, Finance, Computer Services, Property and Securities Division. In January 1994, he was appointed as Senior Group Managing Director of Hong Leong Bank. 

Dato' Lim retired from the Hong Leong Bank and the Hong Leong Group in October 2003 on his own accord after having served the group for 21 years.

On 15 June 2004, he joined AmBank (M) Berhad as its Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer. After the merger of the business operations of AmBank Berhad and AmFinance Berhad (renamed as AmBank (M) Berhad) on 1 June 2005, Dato' Lim was appointed as Managing Director of Business Banking. Dato' Lim has also served as a Director of AmAssurance Berhad and AmIslamic Bank Berhad.
