Tan Sri Hasmah binti Abdullah had a distinguished career spanning over 37 years and was the former Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Chief Executive Officer and Director General from 19 October 2006 to 7 January 2011.
Tan Sri Hasmah was instrumental in the drafting of the Promotion of Investment Act 1986 and amendments to the Income Tax Act 1967, leading the Malaysian delegation to several international conferences such as the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators Conference, the Study Group on Asian Tax Administrators and Research (SGATAR) Conference, the Association of Tax Administrators of Islamic Countries (ATAIC) Conference, International Tax Dialogue (ITD) and Reference Group of Commissioners Conference.
During her leadership at IRB, vast improvements and policy changes to the service delivery system were introduced in the IRB, in particular, refunds, which were made faster with the use of electronic filing. She was instrumental in the extensive implementation of Malaysia’s electronic tax assessment and payment system and was involved in the ongoing planning and implementation of the IRB’s electronic revenue accounting system. For the improvements and innovations that had impacted positively on the taxpaying public, the IRB was awarded the inaugural Prime Minister's Innovation Award in 2009.
Tan Sri Hasmah is also a Commission Member of Securities Commission since 10 March 2011, a trustee of Malaysian Tax Research Foundation since 6 April 2011, a trustee of Dana Amal Jariah since 28 June 2012 and was a Tax Advisor to PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia for the period 1 July 2011 to 30 September 2013.
