Dato' Sri Dr Mohmad Isa began his career in 1983 as an Assistant Director in the Prime Ministers Department following which he was appointed as an Assistant Director at the Pahang State Economic Planning Unit in 1985. He then joined the Ministry of Finance (MOF), holding various positions, including Assistant Secretary in the Government Procurement Division from 1990 to 1995 and Senior Assistant Director of the Budget Management Division until 2000.

In 2004, Dato' Sri Dr Mohmad Isa assumed the position of Deputy Under-Secretary of Investment, MoF (Inc.) and Privatisation Division. He later moved to the Ministry of Transport Malaysia in 2008 as Deputy Secretary General (Operation) and was subsequently appointed as Interim Head of the Public Land Transportation Commission (SPAD) from 2009 to 2010. He returned to MOF to serve as its Deputy Under-Secretary, Government Investment Companies (GIC) Division from 2010 to January 2015 and thereafter as Under-Secretary of the GIC Division. He was the Deputy Secretary General, Treasury (Investment) until his mandatory retirement on 11 March 2018.
