Datuk Alias had a long and distinguished career with the Government which began soon after his graduation from the University of Malaya in 1972 with an Honours Degree in Arts and Economics. He held various senior positions in several Ministries and Department starting at the Ministry of Finance in 1972, Special Officer to the Minister of Finance and then Minister of Trade and Industry. He also held various senior positions in the Ministry of Defence before moving on as Federal Secretary for Sabah. He was the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, a post he held until his retirement in July 2003.
