Dato' Dr. Othman is an engineer by profession with over 35 years of experience in engineering and construction. He began his career in 1983 as a trainee engineer in Hydro Electric Commission (currently known as Hydro Tasmania). He worked as a Project Manager and Site Agent in several global organisations, before becoming Head of the Engineering Department in Projek Penyelenggaraan Lebuhraya Berhad (PROPEL), where he served from 1991 till 1994.

Dato' Dr. Othman was appointed Deputy General Manager of KESAS Holdings Berhad in 1994 and left in 1998 to join KLWK Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of SP Setia Berhad as Project Director. He was Group Managing Director of KSJ Group from 2004 to 2009, subsequently assuming his role as General Manager of Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS) until 2014.

After his tenure as Group Chief Executive Officer of Oxley Holdings (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. from 2014 to 2016, he dedicated his time in leadership roles in the field of entrepreneurship, corporate trainings and personal development programmes. He was the Group Executive Chairman of KL Entrepreneurs Experience Sdn. Bhd., and other KLEX Groups subsidiaries; President of the Empire Business Club; and Executive Chairman of KLIX Academy Sdn. Bhd, from 2016 to 2018. He was also a Board Member of the University Institute of International and European Studies.

Dato' Dr. Othman was the Director General of FELDA until his retirement on 30 September 2020.
