Mr Ip graduated with a B Sc (Econs) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore.

Mr Ip retired from the post of President & Group Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of The Straits Trading Company Limited (STC) in Singapore, the immediate holding company of Malaysia Smelting Corporation Berhad on 31 October 2009. Prior to joining The Straits Trading Group in 1983, he was a supervisor with Ernst & Whinney (now known as Ernst & Young) specializing in audits of conglomerates.

He is the Chairman of The Great Eastern Life Assurance Company Limited and a director of United Engineers Limited, UE E&C Limited, Great Eastern Holdings Limited, and AIMS AMP Capital Industrial REIT Management Limited - all companies listed on the Singapore Exchange Securities Trading Limited (SGX-ST). In addition, he is also a member of the Board of Building and Construction Authority of Singapore.
