Mr Chan began his career as a teacher under the Ministry of Education in 1964. He joined the Jabatan Hasil Dalam Negeri, Malaysia as an Examiner in 1966. In 1987, he was admitted as a member of Yayasan Pengurusan Malaysia. Mr Chan was admitted as an Associate Member of the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia in 1993 and became a fellow of the Institute in 1999. During his 29-year career with the Jabatan Hasil Dalam Negeri, Malaysia, he had held positions such as Assessment Officer, Assistant Director and Senior Assistant Director.
Mr Chan moved on to join the information technology industry in 1995 as the Senior Manager in Corporate and Taxation of Formis Computer Services Sdn Bhd. Thereafter, he was transferred to Perduren (M) Berhad with no change in position and ceased employment with the said company with effect from 1 July 2001.
