| Stock: [REDTONE]: REDTONE DIGITAL BERHAD Nov 9, 2021 10:19 PM | Report Abuse KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 9): A total of 6.47 million premises in the country have been approved for fiberisation so far under the implementation of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA), according to Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek.
Speaking at the Invest Malaysia 2021 event held virtually on Tuesday (Nov 9), Dr Fadhlullah said the country's 4G coverage is currently close to 95% of the populated areas and the average mobile broadband speed is at 31 megabits per second (Mbps).
“The first phase of JENDELA is to improve coverage and we will then improve the quality of the services.
“We currently have a JENDELA map whereby individuals could then log in and tell us where exactly the quality of services is lower than expected,” Dr Fadhlullah elaborated.
He also shared that all states in Malaysia except for Selangor had adopted making broadband as a public utility and shared that the local governments had also adopted various procedural requirements to meet that requirement for all new developments.
“And in the last 14 months since the implementation of JENDELA, this has been taken on positively by the state governments at large,” he said.
In August last year, the government unveiled the RM21 billion JENDELA plan to steer Malaysia towards greater digital connectivity by boosting the efficiency of the national infrastructure and optimising spectrum usage.
The JENDELA action plan, which is part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021-2025), lays the foundation of comprehensive and high-quality broadband coverage as well as prepares the country for the transition towards 5G technology. |

Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the 5G roll-out is for Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya for the first year before it is expanded in stages until it reaches 36% nationwide coverage.
"Next year, the 5G roll-out will be focused on densely populated states, including Penang, Selangor, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak," he told the media after presenting the Deepavali Rumah Prihatin aid to about 200 families at Rumah [email protected] Seasons, here, on Tuesday.
Annuar also witnessed the handover of 2,000 food baskets contributed by Shopee Malaysia to Rumah Prihatin to assist those in need and affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Annuar said the 5G service is a game changer for the economy of the future as it will enable the creation of job opportunities in various high-tech activities.
In addition, under the ongoing National Digital Network (JENDELA), Digital Economic Centres (PEDi) are set to be created to ensure the people have a platform to keep abreast of the latest digital technological developments or conduct businesses via e-commerce.
"All these must be capitalised by the people. That's why the ministry, through the Malaysia Digital Economy Corp, will also open PEDi in Rumah Prihatin here to train city folks to get involved in digital economic activities.
"This matches our goal of encouraging them to resume economic activities or income-generating programmes, in line with the country's transition towards the (Covid-19) endemic stage," he said. |

He said all three contractors had been identified through open tender and they will begin construction work in the near future.
According to him, Sarawak has been given the highest priority level under Phase One of the National Digital Network (JENDELA).
“Sarawak has become a high-priority State because currently, its coverage in terms of connectivity is about 80%. We must standardise it with other places to achieve over 90% (Internet coverage).
“We hope that with the completion of these towers, then more mobile phone users still using the 2G and 3G facilities will switch to the 4G network,” he said in the 'Bersama Annuar' programme on Bernama’s Twitter Spaces which discussed the topic of ‘Capaian Internet — Jangan Ada Yang Terpinggir’ (Internet Access — Let No One Be Left Behind) tonight.
Annuar said the 4G facility would make it easier for the community to use the Internet comprehensively as more activities could be done, including digital economy programmes, e-commerce and others.
“I can assure you that for populated areas in Sarawak, although remote, we will try to improve Internet facilities, especially for the convenience of our school children.
“If possible, we do not want to hear anymore (of students and pupils) having to sit in the boats (to get Internet access). We know in Sarawak, rivers are dangerous (as there are wild animals like crocodiles) for school children. We also hope they do not have to go far from their houses (to get Internet access) because it is not safe for them, he said.
Meanwhile, Annuar said that in line with the government’s efforts to achieve 97% 4G Internet access nationwide, the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) was in the process of issuing tenders for the construction of over 1,161 new broadband towers.
He also urged the people to channel any information regarding Internet access problems in their areas through the JENDELA Map on the JENDELA portal.
Annuar explained that consumer feedback and complaints were important to help the government continuously improve the quality of broadband services in areas that are facing the problem.
"To improve the quality of Internet services, we need feedback crowdsourcing. In rural and urban areas, there are also blind spot areas where although there is coverage, the telecommunication companies have not upgraded the coverage," he said.
Annuar also hoped that telecommunication companies would not ignore the need for Internet access in sparsely populated areas and, instead, to use their profits to upgrade services in these localities.
Meanwhile, Annuar also wished Happy Post Day to all Pos Malaysia employees in conjunction with the World Post Day celebration tomorrow. |
