(Bloomberg) -- Oil in London jumped by the most since June as Pfizer Inc. reported a potential Covid-19 vaccine breakthrough.

Crude futures spiked following news the vaccine, being developed by Pfizer and BioNTech SE, prevented more than 90% of infections in a study of tens of thousands of volunteers.

Markets globally surged. WTI climbed more than 10% in New York, while global equities soared. It led to broader strength in the oil futures curve, with timespreads also moving sharply higher.

A vaccine “would be the most meaningful type of mitigator to the situation,” Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz Bin Salman said prior to the Pfizer announcement at a conference on Monday. “We’re still hopeful that vaccine is found and that vaccine or vaccines spread and hopefully mobility would be regained.”

Since Covid first emerged, oil markets have been steadily recovering from the biggest crash in consumption in a generation. Transport use in Asia has rebounded strongly, but the renewed resurgence of the virus in Europe has continued to weigh on demand in the region. The emergence of a vaccine would not only help regions suffering form renewed lockdowns, but could also help spur the return of aviation demand -- the hardest hit corner of the market.

The relief in the market was seen in the profits from turning crude into transport fuels. Gasoline cracks in the U.S. reached their highest since mid-October, while those in Europe also gained. Jet fuel was also gaining relative to the value of other transport fuels in Europe, Bloomberg fair value data show.

Prices had earlier rallied as Joe Biden declared victory in the U.S. presidential election and began preparations to navigate America’s pandemic-hit economy out of crisis, with potential shifts coming on a range of policies from fiscal stimulus to Iranian sanctions. At the same time, Saudi Arabia said that OPEC+ could extend oil cuts through 2022 as the group seeks to re-balance the glutted market.

Good indicator. Urusharta sold off before oil price started to rebound strongly since yesterday, no longer a major shareholder now. Last time, when urusharta dumped mct shares, it fell below 10sen and now recovered to 17sen. The same effect will happen to velesto especially the oil price has recovered substantially now?

velesto has carried out capital reduction to remove accumulated losses in the past. For the 1st half, overall it was profitable. As such, velesto can declare dividend from now.

Now, urusharta dah tiada lagi senang untuk m&a bagi velesto. Jikalau Sapura yang lebih besar acquire velesto, harga naik bukan? :)

The next potential merger is between Sapura Energy and Velesto. Other than PNB as major shareholder in the two companies, Velesto is also owned by Urusharta Jamaah with a 5.3% stake while EPF has a marginal 2.3% holding, making the total shareholding of the three shareholders at 54.2%.

Sapura Energy is 2.8% owned by KWAP and hence the combined stake together with PNB is 42%.

A merger between the two will result in a combined entity with total market value of about RM2.66bil. Not very big in the scheme of things but the merger of two companies in similar business does make sense.

Overview. Velesto fell into core loss of RM15m in 2Q20 on lower asset utilisation rate. Revenue declined 10% yoy and 20% qoq to RM141m as utilisation rate declined to 67% (2Q19: 74%; 1Q20: 86%). EBITDA margin declined to 43% (2Q19: 48.9%, 1Q20: 54.5%) as the company incurred additional expenses worth RM11m in relation to Covid-19 pandemic.
Key highlights. 1H20 average asset utilisation rate improved to 75% from 70% in 1H19.
Against estimates: Below. 1H20 EBIT of RM37m made up 67% of our FY20F EBIT. We deem this as below forecast in anticipation of weaker 2H20 on lower drilling activities. Main deviation against our forecast stemmed from lower utilisation rate and higher depreciation charges and effective tax rate.
Outlook. Capex and opex cut by oil companies has resulted in lower drilling activities. Currently, only 5 out of Velesto’s 7 rigs (implies max utilisation of 70%) are working with some contracts expiring in the next few months.
Earnings revision. We cut our FY20F/FY21F/FY22F earnings forecast by 856%/70%/142% (Table 2) as we revise lower our utilisation rate and increase depreciation and tax expenses. We now estimate the company to record loss after tax of RM62m/RM76m/RM94m in FY20F/FY21F/FY22F.
Our call. Maintain HOLD on the stock with lower TP of RM0.16 (from RM0.17) which implies 0.5x FY20F P/B. We think the company has low liquidity risk based on its low gearing ratio of 0.37x while the next bullet debt payment may only come due in 2022.

china recovery from covid will drive up oil demand

HANGZHOU: Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd said orders made during its Singles' Day mega-shopping festival had exceeded $56 billion by Wednesday morning, as consumers sought to cash in on a deluge of discounts.

This year's shopping extravaganza comes a week after Alibaba lost almost $76 billion of its market value following China's suspension of the $37 billion listing of Ant Group, the financial technology firm Alibaba owns a third of.

It also takes place as China experiences an economic rebound after getting the spread of the novel coronavirus under control within its borders, following the virus' emergence in the central city of Wuhan late last year.

Alibaba launched the annual online blitz early this year, with two primary discount periods taking place from Nov. 1 through Nov. 3 and again on Nov. 11.

The company will calculate gross merchandise volume (GMV) over the full 11-day period, as opposed to the usual 24 hours.

As of 12:30 a.m. local time (1630 GMT) on Nov. 11, the campaign's GMV had surpassed 372.3 billion yuan ($56.3 billion) with the order rate hitting a record peak of 583,000 per second, Alibaba said.

Alibaba has said it will introduce more than 2 million new products, double last year's amount. Other companies such as Douyin - the Chinese version of Beijing ByteDance Technology Co Ltd's TikTok - JD.com Inc and Pinduoduo Inc are also holding their own Singles Day shopping events.

JD.com, which started its shopping promotions on Nov. 1, said it recorded 200 billion yuan worth of sales by nine minutes after midnight on Wednesday, while electronics retailer Suning.com Co Ltd - part-owned by Alibaba - said it made 5 billion yuan in sales in the first 19 minutes of the day.

Analysts expect this year to be a boon for luxury brands, as Chinese consumers accustomed to going overseas to buy high-end goods are now stuck at home due to coronavirus border closures.

Andy Halliwell, retail analyst at digital consultancy Publicis Sapient, in a client note said, "The lack of consumer tourism which has hit European and U.S. stalwarts like Harrods, Galeries Lafayette and Nordstroms will likely see bigger spending locally".

On China's Twitter-like Weibo, discussions around Singles Day trended while a poll by Sina Entertainment, which garnered 174,000 respondents, found 76,000 people aimed to spend less than 1,000 yuan while only 7,341 planned to dole out more than 10,000 yuan.

Alibaba first launched the shopping event in 2009 and has made it the world's biggest online sales festival, eclipsing Cyber Monday in the United States. Last year, it recorded $38.4 billion in GMV on the day.

Pop star Katy Perry, who has performed at the event before, made an appearance at the company's gala late on Tuesday, albeit via livestream, as travel restrictions on outside visitors remain in place in China. - Reuters
