Business Background

AirAsia Bhd provides air transportation throughout Asia. The airline operator focuses on delivering lower fares without a host of other amenities. It does not provide frequent-flyer miles or airport lounges, but looks to cater affordable transportation to all customers. In-flight meals and drinks are additional purchases available to customers. All short and long-haul flights are nonstop, and the company focuses on high frequency and high turnaround of flights. Operating segments are grouped by geographic regions. Revenue derived from Malaysia makes up the majority of revenue, but the company does hold material operations in several Asian regions.

Betkaukau What DickyMe said is correct. The moment a local analyst gives promising outlook, it's better to get out faster than them...
15/02/2019 13:58
Lanesra I never trust our local analyst, they are paid to write rubbish. Best to read the report yourself.
15/02/2019 14:01
calvincheebursa If indeed Cimb deliberately reduce the TP just in order to reduce the payout for those call warrants which gonna expire soon, then l think SC should act against this practice as it’s just not fair for investors
15/02/2019 14:09
TtreeInvestor Next week should be the quarter result announcement by Thailand subsidiary. One of the main contributor as well.
15/02/2019 14:31
Betkaukau Thailand main contributor? Loss or profit?
15/02/2019 14:39
DickyMe SC also in cohort how to take action. All lanuns work together and share the loot from fools. They hide behind departments and regulations. Operate like secret society.

Shinnzaii Aiyo...try ask yourself and go do research larh...how many UMA reported one actually got take action one...hehe
15/02/2019 14:56
TtreeInvestor MSWG (Minority Shareholders Watchdog Group), Ministry of Finance (SC direct reporting body) and etc will be next course of action. Importantly the retailers shall know how to fight for their interests and rights. If you have the relevant contacts, please file the similar concern to the authorities as well.
15/02/2019 15:05
TtreeInvestor Betkaukau, if you look into last quarter, definitely is in bad shape. But if you look into the top line, there are substantial travel populations in Indo-China area (including Thailand and Vietnam). If the costs maintained well, then will not poor than Malaysia operations.

Riaz1954 Cimb and their analyst must be investigated, there is something fishy in all this. In particular the warrant issuers must be investigated to ensure their is total independence between the warrant and subsequent recommendations nearing maturity dates. I can clearly see a trend

shrobin Oil price affect all airlines. If we invest in airline business, we should be prepared for fluctuation in oil prices! In the worst case situation of very high oil prices, the fuel surcharge kicks in. So, really the real concern should be on the efficiency and the loading. These are internal factors! The oil price is an external factor. Airlines main competition should be on internal factors!
15/02/2019 21:28

ChefSaham From my analysis in terms of oil price impact:

Q4 2018 should not be a problem for AA as the average oil price for Q4 2018 was considered low.

As for 1H 2019 (Q1+Q2), remember that AA has already hedged around 50% at approx $64. Given AA capability, i am sure that they had already hedged the remaining 50% at a price much lower than $60 when the oil price drop below that. From their past QR, the average oil price for 2018 1H was around $85. So even if the oil price go up to $70, it is still lower than last year's price of 85. Imagine with a price of $60.

So i think their hedging strategy will start to pay off, especially in 1H 2019.

Nicholasming91 When 3.00 break we will test 2.80 . Just cut loss and switch to other counters , AA will shine back if oil go back down.
16/02/2019 00:40
factorrumour last year airasia share price dipped cause of high brent oil price and no hedging, this year 1H airasia already hedged almost 50% at around usd 65 even if brent oil price start to move up, so its share price will still dip again like last year? it doesn't make sense at all lol

and cimb never consider about airasia hedging? can't they hedge for 2H19 and 1H20 if the oil price will go up further? so weird
16/02/2019 01:27

Just for information for your "analysis":
The price for jet fuel is not the same like the oil price! Its higher than the oil price!
Jets are not flying with oil they are flying with kerosin. So you need a process on top....

17/02/2019 19:59
Huat1 Surely will be negatively affected...
However, AirAsia have the experience to deal with tjis situation before when the pil price is high
17/02/2019 20:09
Springtime AA with 100million customers can think and twist on how to take an extra RM1 here and there from each customer would be enough to meet any extra costs or make extra money.

I can agree with his analysis here, AA always has a good hedging strategy for oil price.

Springtime Which other company in Malaysia has 100million cash paying customers? With 100m customer and can't make money, the CEO better go for free jump.

LOL, it is MAHB, and the LANUN politicians from UMNO who thinks of such method to milk the customers. AA is protecting customers from paying the extra cost. In Malaysia LANUN policies have driven up prices of goods and services causing artificial inflation due to corrupt agencies and govt departments. All filled with 1 race 1 religion with LANUN mentality.
17/02/2019 23:47
supersaiyan3 If you look at oil prices high and low, compare with average fare of Airasia, actually the two moves together.

This is marginal cost pricing, the higher the cost, the higher the selling price. This strategy is designed to maximise pressure to your competitor. Now, Malindo and MAS shrinking, Airasia can raise prices on its will. As Airasia becomes more and more efficient, Malindo and MAS becomes more and more difficult to catch up.

Average fare from 2001 - 2017
203 183 147 131 143 174 171 195 204 168 177 176 184 166 165 157 167 176

You guys still remember when Airasia was giving out 1 million free tickets? It hasn't give out free tickets for quite some time. In the early years Airasia was doing 100 million + business per quarter. Now its 2.6b per quarter. Amazing growth.
