Why bother?

Following the newsflow on the AI Data Center theme is crucial for investors as it provides insights into industry trends, technological advancements, and key players driving innovation. With AI adoption surging, data centers are becoming critical infrastructure, fueling demand for GPUs, cloud services, and energy-efficient solutions. Staying updated helps investors identify opportunities, assess market growth potential, and make informed decisions in a rapidly evolving sector.

NEWS 1: Nvidia's Blackwell could propel 2025 revenue to $200B: Strategist

Nvidia (NVDA) is at the front and center of conversations concerning the AI trade as investors eye the chipmaker's early 2025 deliveries for its Blackwell GPUs (graphic processing units). "We see significant upside once the delivery numbers ramp up. We think they're going to be able to exceed $200 billion in revenue just from this product launch for this year," Spear Invest Founder and CIO Ivana Delevska forecasts.

Delevska joins Madison Mills in the Yahoo Finance studio to talk about this year's prospects for the artificial intelligence landscape, including her bull cases for semiconductor competitors Broadcom (AVGO) and Marvell Technology (MRVL).

"Now we are getting into a phase where we need physical build-out of data centers and power associated with them. And the US has gone through a period of time where the power infrastructure has not really been upgraded, both on the grid and the generation side," Delevska says about the role energy providers like Vistra (VST) and Constellation Energy (CEG) will play in powering AI data center infrastructure.

News 4: Microsoft raises bar with water-saving data center design

2-Jan-2025: Microsoft’s new data center designs include a cooling system that it claims will consume zero water while at the same time offering liquid cooling of the hardware.

The designs leverage a chip-level liquid cooling solution that can provide precise temperature control without water evaporation. The closed-loop system continuously circulates water between servers and chillers like traditional water-cooling systems, but thanks to the temperature controls, it doesn’t require a fresh water supply due to loss from evaporation.

Steve Solomon, vice president of data center infrastructure engineering at Microsoft, said in a blog post last month that the designs will spare more than 125 million liters (33 million gallons) of water per year per data center.

News 5: New data centre will be one of Canada’s most powerful

Canada’s leading data centre provider, eStruxture Data Centers, will develop its largest facility in Alberta, a province that wants to be – but is far from – a critical hub for this type of infrastructure.

Expected to power up by fall 2026, eStruxture’s new $750-million, 90 megawatts (MW) operation, located near Calgary, will be the Montreal-based company’s third data centre in the area. The seven-year-old firm owns 12 other data centres in the larger industry markets of Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

“Our business wasn’t built by waiting but by leading from the front,” Todd Coleman, president and chief executive officer of eStruxture Data Centers, says about the company’s “massive investment in Alberta.”
