UMW's automotive sales up 4% y-o-y in May 2022, up 10% YTD

KUALA LUMPUR (June 20): UMW Group’s automotive sales grew 4% year-on-year (y-o-y) in May 2022, carried by healthy sales by both UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) and its associate company Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd’s (Perodua).

In a statement on Monday (June 20), UMW said the group sold 26,480 units in May this year as compared with 25,568 units in the same month last year.

“UMWT registered sales of 7,579 units in May 2022, consistent with the 7,595 units it sold in May 2021. Toyota Vios, Yaris, Corolla Cross and Hilux were among its bestselling models in the month of May 2022.

“Meanwhile, Perodua registered sales of 18,901 units in May 2022, 5% higher than the 17,973 units registered in May 2021,” it added.

The group noted that this was despite May being a shorter working month — due to the Hari Raya holidays — as it continued to fulfil its outstanding order book.

Year-to-date, UMW posted 143,151 units delivered for the first five months of 2022, which it noted was a 10% increase as compared to the same period last year.

The group said UMWT sold 36,972 units in the five-month period — 9% higher than the 34,026 units sold in the same period a year ago — and had achieved 51% of its 2022 sales target of 73,000 units.

“To further strengthen its order book, UMWT is offering special promotions for the purchase of the Vios and Yaris as part of its mid-year sales campaign,” it added.

As for Perodua, UMW said the associate company’s year-to-date sales jumped 10% to 106,179 units from 96,281 units in the same five-month period a year earlier.

“To date, Perodua has achieved 43% of its target of 247,800 units for 2022,” the group added.

UMW Holdings Bhd president and group chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Mohd Kenali said the group is pleased with the healthy sales logged by both UMWT and Perodua in May 2022 and noted that both companies will continue to ramp up production.

“Furthermore, the introduction of all-new and facelift models is expected to drive sales in the second half of the year. We strive to offer exciting and great value models as well as offer superior aftersales services to meet our customers’ requirements and expectations,” he added.

Ahmad Fuaad also said that the group is hopeful that the government will further extend the sales tax exemption in view of the high outstanding orders which could not be delivered by June 2022 due to disruptions caused by Covid-19, as well as the semiconductor chip shortage.

UMW shares settled six sen or 1.9% lower at RM3.09, giving it a market capitalisation of RM3.61 billion.
