KUALA LUMPUR (July 7): Former Malayan Banking Group (Maybank) chief executive officer (CEO) and president Tan Sri Abdul Farid Alias will join Bursa Malaysia Bhd as its independent and non-executive director, effective Friday (July 8).

Abdul Farid, 54, was the head honcho of Maybank from August 2013 to April this year.

Apart from Maybank, Abdul Farid had worked at Schroders, JPMorgan and Khazanah Nasional Bhd, among others, according to Bursa Malaysia's filing on Thursday.

"A seasoned chartered banker, Abdul Farid brings to the board over 30 years of investment banking and capital markets credentials," the filing said.

Abdul Farid holds a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in accounting from the Pennsylvania State University and an MBA in Finance from the University of Denver.

He attended the Advanced Management Program by Harvard Business School.

In an interview with The Edge Malaysia weekly in April, Abdul Farid said he had decided to leave Maybank as he felt it was "the right time".

"It's going to be nine years, and I don't think a CEO should overstay," he said then.

He also said that his next stint would not be in banking as "I cannot do anything in competition with Maybank, that's not right".

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that the current Bursa Malaysia chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, is also a former CEO and president of Maybank.

Shares in Bursa Malaysia closed one sen or 0.16% lower at RM6.38, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM5.16 billion.
