KUALA LUMPUR (May 18): Former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner, who pleaded guilty over four-and-a-half years ago to money laundering and breaking anti-bribery laws but has yet to be sentenced, appears to be enjoying the high life and was apparently spotted recently at The Restaurant at Mr C, a fine dining restaurant located near Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
In the latest issue of Whale Hunting, American journalist Tom Wright said over the past four years, Leissner has been helping the Justice Department in its case against Roger Ng, a former Goldman managing director who pleaded not guilty.
“A relatively low-level employee, Ng was sentenced to 10-years in jail in March for helping Leissner, his former boss, embezzle money, among other charges (Ng is appealing the decision).
“Leissner was supposed to be sentenced earlier this year, but the Justice Department has delayed until September,” he said.
Wright added that the terms of Leissner's probation are not publicly known.
“But, as the photo shows, the Justice Department appears to be allowing Leissner a wide latitude to enjoy himself in Beverly Hills, while his former employee Ng (a Malaysian) is in jail.
“The photo was taken earlier this month, when a number of global business people and other VIPs were in town for the Milken Institute Global Conference at the nearby Beverly Hilton.
“Clearly, Leissner still operates in elite circles,” he said.
Wright said no Goldman banker went to jail after the subprime crisis, the Libya debacle, and now, only Roger Ng is in jail for the 1MDB scandal.
“We at Whale Hunting are wondering what kind of sentence Leissner will get in September. And, in the meantime, we'd love to know what else he's getting up to beyond fine dining,” he said.
