KUALA LUMPUR (May 23): The government is to undertake a study regarding the drafting and implementation of anti-scalping legislation in the wake of claims on social media over scalpers hoarding and reselling Coldplay concert tickets at hiked prices.
At a joint press conference on Tuesday (May 23), Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, together with Domestics Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, said no official complaints have been made to the Domestics Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), and urged buyers to lodge one if elements of fraud are involved in the purchase of the tickets.
Fahmi also stressed that Live Nation Malaysia, the Coldplay concert organiser, informed him that e-tickets have yet to be issued. In turn, he called for individuals who have purchased a ticket and received it, to immediately call the KPDN to make a complaint.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said Malaysia does not have anti-scalping legislation and will therefore cooperate with related ministries to study legal provisions which can be enacted to address the issue.
“We are also aware that other jurisdictions, as a result of similar incidents, have enacted their own anti-scalping laws, such as in the US and Australia. We will study their cases, and whether the steps and efforts taken are successful or not,” he added.
Salahuddin said that it is very timely for the government to look at the enactment of an Act to address scalping. He said discussions may involve the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Youth and Sports, citing the involvement of bus and football match tickets.
