KUALA LUMPUR (June 28): Can maker Can-One Bhd announced that former chief justice Tun Arifin Zakaria has been appointed as senior independent non-executive director and chairman of the group.

He replaces Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, who is vacating the position in line with Practice 5.3 of the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance 2021 on the nine-year term limit applicable to independent directors. This follows the conclusion of the group's annual general meeting held on Wednesday (June 28).

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Wednesday, Can-One said Arifin, 72, served in various capacities in the government, both in judicial and legal services, before being appointed as judicial commissioner in March 1992, and judge of the High Court of Malaya in 1994. In 2002, he was elevated as judge of the Court of Appeal, in 2005 as judge of the Federal Court and then in October 2008 as chief judge of the High Court.

In September 2011, Arifin was appointed as the 13th chief justice of Malaysia, where he served until his retirement on March 31, 2017.

He also holds directorships in Microlink Solutions Bhd and was formerly group chairman of Permodalan Nasional Bhd from May 2021 to 2023.

At noon break on Wednesday, Can-One shares closed up 3 sen or 1.05% at RM2.88, giving it a market capitalisation of RM553.4 million. A total of 10,000 shares were traded.
