IT is UMNO that should be disbanded as PAS has been championing Islam since its inception, unlike the nationalist party, said a PAS representative.
According to Harakah Daily, PAS Women’s Wing chief (DMPM) Senator Nuridah Mohd Salleh described UMNO’s call for PAS to be disbanded as hilarious as the party only just started incorporating Islamic values in its governance, unlike the long-time Islamist party.
“We have been championing Islamic values since 1951 while UMNO have just embraced it in recent times. Given the seniority, UMNO is the one that should be dissolved,” she said.
Three days ago, UMNO secretary general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan suggested for PAS to be dissolved as his party was already spearheading Islam.
He added that UMNO had amended its party constitution in 2019 by inserting clauses to uphold Islam instead of only championing the Malays.
“Schedule 3.3 of the UMNO’s constitution was uplifted to Schedule 3.1, which is to uphold and defend Islam as the religion of the Federation but at the same time, respect religious freedom as stated in the Federal Constitution.
“Hence, I urge PAS to disband itself. That is my message to them,” Berita Harian reported Ahmad Maslan as saying.
Look in the mirror
It is to note that PAS is in reality, a splinter party of UMNO. Its early leaders broke away from the nationalist party in 1951 after the latter refused to negotiate terms to turn then-Malaya into an Islamic state in its discussions with the British for Independence.
UMNO, back then, being led by British-educated Malay elites, were more favourable towards secular values given the country’s multi-racial demographic.
With that, Nuridah urged Ahmad Maslan to get UMNO to practise Islamic values in the party itself first before preaching to others.
“UMNO can start with curbing corruption and get its leaders to dress modestly,” she quipped. – May 14, 2022.
