GEORGE TOWN: Having recorded statements from 21 people over the death of a junior doctor last month, police are expected to wrap up investigation soon.

Once that is done, only then can they determine whether there will be a need for an inquest or otherwise, said George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong.

He said that for now, police would first have to complete and submit the investigation paper to the DPP office for the next course of action.

He said police had recorded statements from 21 individuals including the doctor’s family, colleagues and friends.

“We still need to complete a few things before wrapping up and submitting the papers to the deputy public prosecutor’s office,” he said.

ACP Soffian said as of now, the case would still be classified as sudden death as there was no criminal element discovered.

He added that the post-mortem report had also been completed, but declined to comment further.

Early this month, state health department director Dr Ma’arof Sudin, in a statement, had confirmed that the deceased was a graduate medical officer who was placed to work at Hospital Penang on April 4.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had said earlier that a special task force had been formed to look into the death of a houseman and allegations of a bullying culture in the medical fraternity.

The minister said he had received the initial report from the houseman’s head of department, while police are also wrapping up their investigation.
