PUTRAJAYA: A poultry farm will temporarily stop supplying chicken this weekend due to weight issues – their stock is too small to be sold.
This is the explanation given by a poultry producer to the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry on claims that a cartel is planning to close poultry farms on Saturday and Sunday (May 21 and 22) over upaid subsidies.
Its minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said a poultry operator had written to explain the matter, saying that it could not supply its chicken because the birds were small, weighing only 1.1kg.
“Usually, the chicken will be sold off when it reaches 1.8kg in weight after a certain number of days.
“Because of the weight, the company does not want to supply the chicken, fearing complaints by consumers.
“They also want to protect their good name in the market,” he said after launching a special logo to identify subsidised and controlled items on Thursday (May 19).
Nanta stressed that the move by this particular poultry producer was temporary and only for two days.
“This will not affect chicken supply in the market. The company’s decision is not to undermine the industry nor is it done with bad intention,” he added.
Asked why the chicken was experiencing slow growth, the producer informed the ministry that the quality of chicken feed could have affected its growth.
According to a new report, a cartel is planning to close poultry farms this weekend as a sign of protest to the government, allegedly for late payment of the subsidy of 60 sen per chicken.
The closure threat would have drastically cut supply and led to a hike in chicken prices.
On another matter, Nanta said the ministry issued an Approved Permit (AP) for the import of sugar and flour and it was still working on the details of the latest policy concerning the permit.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the need for APs to import food has been revoked in a move to ensure there will be sufficient food supply in the country.
