KUALA LUMPUR: Segambut member of parliament Hannah Yeoh is calling for the government to intervene in the issue of rising prices of goods that is currently affecting the people.
In a statement today, she said her team is in the midst of gathering data on price comparisons, which was also affecting traders.
The information and data will be submitted to the government, she said.
Yeoh said traders she had met in Taman Bukit Maluri had complained about the price hike.
"The rising cost of flour affects the price of roti canai; and logistic costs result in the rising prices of fruits, clothes and even food.
"The price of animal feed pushes the prices of chicken and pork upwards. Even the bak kut teh traders are affected.
"It is disheartening to hear that senior citizens considered giving up after decades of business. I am also worried for the children who might not be with food due to the rising cost of goods," she said today.
The cost of living is taking centre stage as the country is expected to face inflation around the middle of this year.
The Russia-Ukraine war has largely contributed to today's weak economy and the rising cost of living.
India has also banned the export of wheat, driving demand up, though Malaysia does not import the grain from the South Asian nation.
In one step to address food security issues, the government has done away with the need for approved permits for the import of food, enabling anyone to do so.
