Indonesian company Gojek has confirmed that it has no plans to expand its services to Malaysia.

This comes after a car bearing the company’s logo was spotted in Kuala Lumpur, which led to speculation that the company may be offering its services which include ride-hailing and food delivery, in Malaysia.

The company, however, told Tech In Asia that the vehicle was part of a filming project for a campaign that will be released later this year.

As of June 7, the Land Public Transport Agency has listed 33 companies such as Grabcar, Mula Car and Riding Pink under its licensed ehailing companies list. Gojek is not on the list.

Previously, Gojek was allowed to test its operations locally under a six-month pilot project for bike-hailing back in 2020. However, the plan was scrapped in 2021 due to safety concerns as high accident rates involving riders and pillion riders have been reported in Malaysia.

Gojek is currently operating in three countries namely Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam. According to stats released by the company, the Gojek app has been downloaded more than 200 million times and it has over two million driver partners across South-East Asia. It is also Indonesia’s first unicorn startup, a term reserved for companies that have reach a valuation of US$1bil (RM4.4bil).
