GEORGE TOWN: Commuters using the Penang Roll-On Roll-Off (RoRo) ferry service will continue to enjoy a 50% discount on fares until the end of the year.

Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said the promotion will be extended from July 1 to Dec 31 and is applicable to motorcyclists, cyclists and rickshaw operators.

He said in the first six months of the promotion from Jan 1 to May 31, a total of 62,564 motorcyclists and 1,393 cyclists in Penang enjoyed the fare discount, with the commission bearing RM65,539.10.

"As a Federal Statutory Body under the Transport Ministry, PPC introduced the (50% discount) initiative under the Keluarga Malaysia aspiration.

"As such, PPC will continue to bear 50% of the ferry fare to users for another six months to reduce the cost burden on commuters.

"(People from) all walks of life, regardless of whether or not they are Malaysians, will be able to enjoy this 50% discount," Tan said in a statement on Tuesday (June 28).

With the discounts, motorcyclists just need to pay RM1, for example, to cross while cyclists are charged 70 sen.

Tan said the initiative is expected to benefit about 100,000 commuters over the next six months.
