KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — Malaysia’s professional men’s doubles duo, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi had once again stunned reigning Olympic champions Wang Chi-Lin-Lee Yang to roar into the last eight of the 2022 Malaysia Open, here, today.

Strong support from home fans at the Axiata Arena had definitely inspired Yew Sin-Ee Yi as they went all out attack in most parts of the game which worked in their favour in the second round today.

The world number 10 pair took 41 minutes to prevail against the world number four Taiwanese duo, 21-17, 21-18.

Commenting on the match, Yew Sin said the cheers from the fans had certainly given them an advantage to score two-straight wins over the opponents after their rubber set victory in the quarter finals of the 2021 World Championships, last year.

“Thank God we won today, we did not expect anything before the game started, we only planned to take point by point and give our best fight,” he told reporters after the match.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi will square off against sixth seeds Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia, who beat Mark Lamsfuss-Marvin Seidel 19-21, 21-10, 21-15.

Meanwhile, 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games bronze medallists Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were truly on fire from start to finish to decimate the challenge from Singapore’s Hee Yong Kai Terry-Loh Kean Hean with a 21-16, 21-13 win.

Aaron-Wooi Yik has set up a fiery contest against “The Daddies”, Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan, in what would be a repeat of their bronze medal match in Tokyo Olympics last year.

The Indonesian duo had earlier defeated He Ji Ting-Zhou Hao Dong from China 21-13, 21-10.

On the quarter-final action tomorrow, Aaron hoped that they can reproduce their form in Tokyo to again oust the Indonesians.

It was a lucky day for 2022 German Open champions Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani as they obtained a “free pass” to the quarter-finals after their opponents Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty of India gave a walkover before the game started.

It is believed that an injury issue affecting one of the Indian players caused them to pull out from the match.

Newly crowned Indonesia Open champions Liu Yu Chen-Ou Xuan Yi of China prevented an all-Malaysian affair by disposing of professional pair Tan Kian Meng-Tan Wee Kiong 21-18, 17-21, 21-14.

The result means that Yu Chen-Xuan Yi will take on Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin in the last eight tomorrow. — Bernama
