Report: Infighting will doom us in GE15, Ku Li warns UMNO

UMNO veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah warned UMNO leaders stop their infighting or risk getting booted out in the 15th General Election (GE15).

In a report by Utusan Malaysia today, he urged party leaders to keep calm and not attack each other whenever a situation arises.

“We should be closing ranks to defeat our opponents in the next general election. If we keep fighting among ourselves, we will be weakened,” he was reported as saying.

Last week, former UMNO supreme council member Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman alleged that party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was dissatisfied with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the latter was holding the coveted post despite only being a party vice president.

The ambassador-designate also accused Zahid and former party supremo, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak of backing PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to become prime minister last year, in attempt to dislodge Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

On June 22, Johor UMNO deputy liaison chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed criticised Ismail Sabri, calling him the “weakest’ prime minister in the nation’s history for failing to announce a new plantation and commodities minister after Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin left Bersatu for Parti Bangsa Malaysia.

On that note, Tengku Razaleigh, who is also Gua Musang MP, said that internal conflicts between party leaders could be misused by opposition leaders to “poison the minds” of their respective followers.

“And this will impact UMNO and the country badly in the future,” the former minister concluded. – July 3, 2022
