PUTRAJAYA: Political parties will not be allowed to receive contributions from government-linked firms, including companies bidding for government projects and permit approvals.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this was among the provisions being considered for the Political Funding Bill which would be tabled in Parliament in October.

"The Bill is currently being drafted and there are many things being proposed.

"The idea of having a law to regulate political contribution is to ensure transparency and accountability of political parties.

"Among the proposals was that government-linked companies or companies seeking government permits or contracts will be barred from making donations,” he said.

"This will cover companies which are involved in large government companies.

"Whether this will be approved and how this will be implemented is still being looked into. We will be having engagement sessions with stakeholders before the law is tabled, hopefully in October," said Wan Junaidi in an interview at his office on Tuesday (Aug 16).

Also being proposed is not to allow political parties to accept donations from foreign governments or foreign non-governmental organisations.

Wan Junaidi added that the penalties for the offences under the Bill would require thorough deliberation as a high quantum could result in an elected representative losing their seat and forcing a by-election.

Asked if the law would be ready in time for the coming general election, Wan Junaidi said it depends on when the polls are held.

"If there are no disruptions such as the dissolution of Dewan Rakyat, we hope the Bill will become law during the coming budget session," he said.
